KA-BAR Tech Talk

sac troop,

Re: 1209. You are correct. At KA-BAR there are several written sources on old knives and one stated 1980s. That is wrong and being updated. I checked with some archive catalogs and found that the 1209 circa to be at least 1968-1976 (it may be wider).

blazerman,

Sorry, the prevailing opinion in PD mtgs is "No".

Thanks for the info, Toooj and sac troop. Sorry, I should have been more clear: I just found the thing online poking around, I don't actually *have* one. If I do see one around I'll definitely snap it up; I like the profile of the blade with the straighter clip than the 1217. Sorry 'bout that. :)

Troop, yours looks like it's in fine shape! Nice knife!

Thanks it's a good old knife, but certainly not NIB. If your not married to the idea of the finish and handle type. I'd look at the new 2013 catalog. There's a .pdf file on another thread here. Look at the model 1235 Marine Hunter. It's a very similar knife with a bright finished blade and a stacked leather handle.

DTM1536,

You can disassemble the knife, strip and re-powder coat the blade or there are several coatings available; Cera coat and Kalgard come to mind.
Good luck. Let us know how it comes out.

Thanks toooj ill give you an update when I feel up to doing it. Just out of curiosity, did you personally have any part in designing the 1245?

DTM1536,

Yes. One of my first designs at KA-BAR. IIRC, 1996-7. Along with the 1247 Warthog, 1270 NG Tanto and the 1272 NG Fighter. The 1245 is the last survivor of that bunch.
Hope this helps.

That Tanto is one of my favorite knives, glad it's still hanging in there. No thoughts circulating around about dropping it are there? Need to replace mine soon (beat the warranty out of it! :D)

Also, if something is not listed in the catalog that was in the year previous but absent from the 2013 print, are we to assume that it is discontinued? Such as the leather handled Tantos, G10 Mule folders, and Zombie "Chop Stick"?

stvpourciau,

The Leather handled Tantos did not do well; for various reasons that I won't go into. The G-10 MULES are still available on the website. The Chop Stick is discontinued.
We have no reason to drop the 1245 Tanto. It is still a very strong seller.
Thanks for all of the support for KA-BAR Knives.

Well Tooj, I would like to personally thank you and congratulate you on creating such a hard working and effective implement. Aside from its flawless aesthetics, it can also perform exceedingly well. Its a tool I could trust my life to if it came down to it. Thanks for what you do, Tooj, and keep up the great work. As long as we got someone like you working up at KA-BAR I know the products will always be quality

Toooj,
I'm sure it's been asked numerous times but when, if you could guestimate, do you think the bk10s will come out again? I seen a video of this years shot show and was lookin to pick up my first Becker soon. If it won't come out soon I'm thinking of just getting the bk2 or bk9, although eventually I'll have all 3. Anyway thanks for your time.

Tooj,
what are the real specs on the 6199CU lg dog's head coppersmith?
I find it difficult to believe that it's got a 5" blade but only a 8 5/8" OAL when open. (per the kabar website)
One of those has to be wrong, unless the blade sticks out past the end of the handle when it's closed.

thanks!

Pykrim,

BK-10s are reintroduced this year. They should be released April 15th. (We are waiting for the sheaths to arrive.)

1066vik,

Good catch. The 6199 has a 3-7/8"L Blade and has an OVL of 8-7/8".

Hope this helps.

Evenin', Toooj. Would you be able to pull up some information on both the Ka-Bar-Lo model knives and the T75 fish knife? I'm looking to share this information in the Traditional forum. I'm waiting for the new Coppersmiths to show up in my favorite local toy stores, myself. :D

Hi guys at KA-BAR,
I have a question about the hard shell plastic sheath for 3/4 sized KA-BAR MK2.

The current plastic sheath for 3/4 sized KA-BAR uses two lashing points (retention strap ) and a guard-lock that does not cover the entire guard. Recently the hard plastic sheath for the full-size KA-BAR MK2 got a guard-lock (guard edge snap) update. The sheath uses a single retention strap and a guard lock that fully covers the guard.

In my opinion, the update in the full-size plastic sheath is a major benefit. I would like to see if the same guard-lock principle can be integrated in the plastic sheath for the 3/4 MK2. It would improve the smoothness of drawing the knife, re-sheathing and securing. A great plus in many perspectives.

The idea has probably already crosses the minds at KA-BAR - and enthusiasts. I was wondering about the possibilities. Thanks you in advance for your attention.

Cheers!

HH,

The KA-BAR -LO was a tradional Barlow produced by KA-BAR. I don't have the exact dates but it was produced in the 1920s. KA-BAR produced the Barlow up to the 1970s.
The 1920s KA-BAR-LO came with black composite and smooth bone handles.During the later years that changed to Delrin. "KA-BAR-LO" was stamped transversely across the long front bolster.Of course the stamp changed from 'KA-BAR' to 'ka-bar'during the 1960s. There were two versions: a Spear point main blade and pen; and a Clip point main blade /pen combo. The Clip Bladeknife was designated with a 1/2.
In 1983 the KA-BAR Collectors Club Knife produced a Dog's Head Version in Stag with "KA-BAR-LO" stamped longitudinally on the Bolster. In 1985 a Dogs Head Version in Jigged Bone was produced; No stamping on the Bolster. In 1990 a bent Barlow was produced with a Clip MainBlade and Jigged Bone in Green and Blue. One had a dogs head, the other had an oval shield. No Stamping on the Bolster.

The T75 was a 2 bladed fishing knife. It had a long clip and a scaler/hook degorger. The handles were Cream (Yellow) celluloid.
It was the smaller version (4-1/2") of the T29 Fish knife (not to be confused with the TL-29 linemen's knife)which had a 5" handle length.
Over the years there were variations of the clip blade and second blade. We had, at one time, a huge collection of the various T-29/75 variations but decided to get rid of most of them as the celluloid was breaking down and causing havoc in the collection.

Hope this helps.
