Ka-Bar USMC, Becker BK2 or Gerber LMF II

What do I plan to do with it? Skinning small game, making shelter, building fires, general camp work. Whatever comes up, really. I live on a ranch, so a good knife is a must have.

BK2 (which I see you've decided on) will do all of that and will excel at all of it but cleaning small game. All of the knives you list are too big for that task but for a couple of bucks you could (and probably should) carry a small SAK. That tiny little blade on the SAK classic is superb for cleaning rabbits, squirrels, etc. Next time I get a squirrel or rabbit, maybe I'll have to use my BK2 to clean it just to see but a tiny little blade is just so nice for that task. :)

I have all three of these knives. The BK2 is best for batoning by far with the LMF2 second and the Ka-Bar third. The Becker is a brute of a knife and a stronger design for batoning. The LMF2 has the best sheath of the three and the Ka-Bar is the lightest.

Yep, that's about it

I too say the BK2 will suit your needs the best, but don't rule out the Esee RC5/6(a bit more $), the Scrapyard Dumpster Mutt or 511, Cold Steel Recon Scout, Condor Rodan(5" bld) or Varan(8"bld),the SOG tech bowie or the SOG Aura camp knife, or the Schrade Extreme Survival(SCHF9)-this one is great for batoning and super strong...a pic of its strength included. The last pic is all 4 of schrade's extreme survival blades, they're all good knives and cost only $40-60
The LMF and Ka-bar are great knives but the LMF has serrations which aren't ideal for wilderness survival and like previously said, the ka-bar has a stick tang. Aside from the Recon Scout, the Esee's and the Tech Bowie all the knives I listed are good for your requirements and under $100. Another great knife for around $112(online) is the Boker Voxknives ROLD. with a 6-1/4" blade of D2 steel. This one I also posted a pic of cuz its just that awesome, IMO;)

You seem pretty knowledgeable so I was wondering what you think is better for batoning and all around heavy use.

The Kabar Becker BK2 vs Kabar Becker BK7 (or even the BK10) I liked the shape and length of the BK7. But I really like the 1/4 inch blade on the Bk2

The BK2 is great for splitting. The thickness of it is going to force the wood apart farther and split faster. The BK7 will be able to split larger pieces though.

Here's a video I did recently comparing several models. It includes the BK2, 10, and 7.

Great video man, I've decided to get the bk9, and the d2 D'Eskabar for smaller tasks!

I think the BK10 is a better choice than the BK2....tough as nails but imo a better all around camp knife

I love the BK2. For me, it is the perfect fixed blade, however, i strongly believe everyone should own a USMC. The BK2 will do anything you ask and more, so I would get the BK2.
The MSMC is a legendary knife, and just has this nostalgia around it. When you hold it, you feel like a total bad @$$.

Apparently nobody checks the date stamp or reads follow up posts...

You said it, not me. I had a long winded breakdown of these blades ready to go, but then noticed it was 3 years old. Why do people post in necro threads? (oh wait, I just did!)

I was responding to a question someone asked. BTW JDX, this is why you should start a new thread instead of tacking onto an existing one. ;)

What's funny about this is: whenever noobz create a new post, if the subject of the post has EVER been discussed since the dawning of time, everybody will pile on the noob telling him to use the search function! So when somebody does a search and finds the exact thing they want to talk about has already been posted, and they dredge up the thread, they get piled on for bringing up "necrothreads"... SMH. Damned if ya do, damned if ya don't.

If it's been brought back up, it's because it's obviously interesting to somebody. Have the knives JDX was talking about changed in the past 3 years?

To contribute to the thread, the BK2 is a jack of all trades, master of none. It sorta all around sucks at everything, but it will do most things a knife needs to do in spite of itself. If took me a loooong time to come to that conclusion. It's too short to be a great chopper, but it'll do. It's too heavy to be an EDC, but I did it for a year. It's too thick to cut most stuff and pretty much sucks for "bushcraft", etc, but it will still do it if it has to. It doesn't really whittle or carve wood worth a damn at all. I compared it head to head with an Ontario tak and the difference was night and day. It's just ok at everything at best.

Well first off, the person that drug up this thread wasn't asking the same question the OP was. Second, if a question has been answered, there isn't much reason to ask it again is there?
