What do guys think of this knife as a self defense to be kept by your bed kinda knife? I held the 7" one today and the grip didnt feel that grippy. What are you opinions on this knife? Is this knife capable of performing camping tasks as well or is the blade "weak" for anything else than stabbing someone?

Haven't kept a knife by my bed for protection since I was a teenager (Had to have it to keep the dinosaurs out of the cave.)

I grew out of the need.

Considering the knife was designed for and issued to thousands of military personnel for many years, and intended to be a hard-use fighting and field knife, "weak" is not a label I'd use.

Who....or what.....are you sleeping with???

It's 7" of 1095 steel, which you can get about as sharp as anything....it's put together like a tank, I know that because I just took one apart.....what more do you need in a knife?

in short. this is a great knife. 7 in is all u will ever need to fight with. great camp knife. yes it can baton through wood and other tasks. maybe not as good as other relatively heavier blades but still good. but for self defense i think the best option is....(drumroll) a 12 gauge

I couldn't say a bad thing about the Ka-Bar even if it cost twice as much. Fortunately, it doesn't.:)

The Kabar has been a mainstay in military conflicts for decades. I think you will find it more than adequate for what you will use it for.

The Ka-Bar is great. If a 12 gauge or 9mm isn't a viable option for you I would suggest a good aluminum baseball bat as a companion piece to the knife. In fact, I'd reach for the bat first in most situations. 7" is closer to a bad guy than I really want to get.

+1 on the baseball bat, or even better yet, a t-ball bat.

Breaking bones/shock is more effective in the short term than bleeding someone out/attempting to slice tendons for those that aren't trained specifically how to use a knife. Think of how many times you have cut yourself and not realized it until seconds later. Obviously, that is a much smaller scale, but if someone is in your bedroom that you don't want to be there, any delay in effect counts.

If you don't have access to a firearm, I'd suggest a baseball bat before a knife. More range, hits hard and less messy.

If only had a knife, the KABAR wouldn't be a bad choice.

I'd go for a bat before I ever went for a knife for HD. I don't want to get that close to the person.

Get a shotgun for home defense.

i got a knife ( s ), ball bat , ax, hatchet ( estwing ), AND a shotgun. you guys think i'm overdoing it ?

I have the rubber grip model and while I like the grip and feel, the rubber really smells. I was thinking it would fade over time but a few months later and it still smells. Not a terrible odor but definitely noticeable.

It would do fine for SD duty but if you are averse to guns I would go for a large flashlight (for light AND attitude adjustment) or machete first; I keep both near my bed. And yes, I know it's a bit weird.

A bat would be good and there's the advantage you won't cut yourself with it accidentally but on the other hand it takes more room to swing. Though I doubt the intruder you go all Sammy Sosa on would be getting up any time soon!

the knife's been doing that since WWII, along with pounding tent stakes, batoning firewood, cleaning game, etc. if it fails, that's probably on the end user. baseball bats give more reach, a 2x4 would work too.

all my knives are pretty close to my bed but if i hear something go bump in the night im reaching for a nice solid piece of wood.
Knife laws here are silly enough without "MAN KILLS INTRUDER WITH HUNTING KNIFE" plastered all over the headlines.
and in the inevitable post-intrusion court appearance i would certainly feel more comfortable having grabbing a piece of wood than a blade

I keep firearms as my primary HD weapon but the K-Bar has been battle proven for about 50 years so I think its a pretty good piece of equipment and I wouldnt feel neglected in a knife fight using it.

I see people recommending a bat. Why not go in between and mount a CS Bushman spearhead on a staff? Best of both worlds. :)

yeah this is what I'd say too. a knife is sometimes attractive for self defense because of it's ability to conceal it. if some how I could clip a baseball bat to my belt, I'd be all over that. I put my umnumzaan on my nightstand sometimes, just so I can play with it when I cant sleep. if an unwanted person comes into my house, I'd probably go for my giant steel wrench---i'd rather not get blood all over my carpet. a baseball bat would be better but i love my wrench.

given its history though, i'd guess the kabar usmc has probably killed more people than most other knives combined, unless you count the kils the blackhawk tatang has in modern warfare 2
