Ka Bar USMC for protection?

speaking as someone who has been unfortunate enough to be hit in the head by aluminum baseball bat, I would recommend wood for self defense if you want something more lethal. The aluminum bat that hit me bounced off my skull leaving me with a nasty cut and a mild concussion. the doctor that stitched me up said if it had been a wooden bat it would have caved my skull in. apparently solid wood does not flex and give like hollow aluminum. something to think about if you intend to defend yourself with it, on a side note however, the aluminum bat surely put me down and would probably be a good choice for a slightly less (but still possibly) lethal approach.

I've actually had it come up where I've been woken out of a deep sleep by someone in the bedroom with me. Turned out it was the landlord. Turned out I had a Smith 629 next to the bed. Turned out he needed to excuse himself so he could wash his pants.

That's the only time it's ever come up for me. That gun still sits on the night stand. Not too far away is a Wilson 870 mod, a PR-24, a SureFire flashlight, and a Gerber Mark II. I'd feel pretty comfortable in an SHTF scenario with any of them. And yeah, the 1217 could easily replace the MK-II and I wouldn't feel a bit bad about it.

all my knives are pretty close to my bed but if i hear something go bump in the night im reaching for a nice solid piece of wood.
Knife laws here are silly enough without "MAN KILLS INTRUDER WITH HUNTING KNIFE" plastered all over the headlines.
and in the inevitable post-intrusion court appearance i would certainly feel more comfortable having grabbing a piece of wood than a blade

"MAN BASHES INTRUDER'S SKULL IN LIKE A PUMPKIN" sounds alot more socially acceptable to the PC crowd :)

Heck, skip the ka bar and get a Marine to be by your bed and stand guard! He might even carry his own ka bar.....:D

Better keep a handgun with rubber bullets. The sound of gun shot would deter a small time thief. The sting of a rubber bullet will take the wits out of most hard core ones :D

the ka-bar is a great multical task knife. my 1st line of defense is a super bright l.e.d. after blinding them you can use any other back up response.

Seriously, guys. Assuming we aren't talking about a movie scene, a knife is way down on the list of effective home defense tools. If a firearm is not an acceptable option then probably a tazer or stun gun should be the next choice, although I think they are so anti-glamorous and un-rambo-ish that many guys dismiss them without giving it much thought. They offer distinct advantages over a knife (longer range, instant incapacitation, and most importantly, non-lethal). This last bit should be among the first things you consider. If you are willing to spend the time researching which knife will effectively dispatch an intruder, you should put at least a little thought and research into the legal implications of doing so.
Anyone with the stones to come into your home while you are there is probably packing a weapon against which your knife is going to be totally inadequate. If you are going to arm yourself against a real-world threat, do so with some common sense. Otherwise, you ARE a threat, if not to others, then to yourself.

Personally if guns aren't an option, I'd choose a long blade like a waki over a bat any day.

I've actually seen several occasions where A bat failed. -twice I've seen a guy take a hit only to keep coming, then wrestling the bat away from the other guy and then beat his a$$.

I myself have been attacked by an angry step brother with a batton in his hand and murder in his eyes. I saw the first swing coming and I just put my arms up to block, and rushed in quick as I could, this way he wasn't able to get a full swing and only caught me on my forearm and shoulder (left a couple good bruises but no broken bones)

The fight quickly became a wrestling match that we both walked away from bloody but nothing too serious.

Now if he'd of come at me with a knife or short sword, I've no doubt Id be quite dead.

On another note, tazers are cool but the kind that shoot only have one shot. ...something to keep in mind.

What do guys think of this knife as a self defense to be kept by your bed kinda knife? I held the 7" one today and the grip didnt feel that grippy. What are you opinions on this knife? Is this knife capable of performing camping tasks as well or is the blade "weak" for anything else than stabbing someone?

Here is my response. Get a whole box full and throw them at the intruder. :)
