Ka Bar USMC question

the cro-van alloy is superior to the old 1095. as frank[knarfeng] said the newer alloy is not radically different but the heattreat[ which ka-bar does well] does make the knife a better edge holder than the original. in fact ka-bar has moved to this cro-van in most of their line. i'm hoping they put it in the becker line since i ordered a becker 9 last wk.

i'm ordering a bk7 this week. on this website, it states 1095 on the bk9. when you click on it, it says they use cro-van.

edit - i think it's the old 1095 - when i click on the usmc, it has the cro-van

The KA-BAR web site says the Beckers are made with 1095 Cro-Van.

Although they do have models with D2 blades.

To my knowledge, the only thing KA-BAR makes out of straight 1095 is the guard on the marine knife.

I seldom trust storefront sites for steel specs. I do usually trust manufacturer sites.

I had a USMC Ka-bar growing up. Abused it as only a boy and teenager could. It never failed. I think I got it as a birthday present in 1986 and managed to hang onto it until I around 1999 or 2000 when I bought my first house and somehow, somewhere lost it in the move.

I replaced it with a new one and have had the same results.

It takes abuse and *usually* holds a pretty good edge.

My wife got me a black rubber handled version a few years ago for Christmas and I have almost destroyed that one. Modded the handle and used it to "practice" my grinding skills on the edge. Needless to say, I'm not that competent in that area.

For the price, it's hard to beat a Ka-bar.
