These two knives came to me this week, and I've been itching to try them out. Of course they went through the Fonly test, this is where I take a large piece of wood, break it into four varried sizes. Then, get a fire going, now I didn't have a fire this time considering I was using some treated wood, but I did all the steps I would have just didn't get a fire going. So, here they are.

-Ka-Bar usmc:
11-7/8" oal
7" blade
~10 Oz
1095 carbon steel
leather sheath.

-Buck 119:
10-1/2" oal
6" blade
Bucks 420HC
8.5 Oz
leather sheath

Here is what was going to be split up, a Piece of 1X6.

First up was the ka-bar. Now it didn't do bad at all, I would say 90 percent of what the BK7 can do because of its thickness. where as the bk7 split on the way down, the ka-bar the same, but not much.

This was the chopping test, 6-8 hits and I was through.

So there, my method of fire making, get the four steps done and it'll be fun, after tinder, shavings, sticks, splits and chunks.
Works everytime

Now for the Buck 119. I hated it for this work, it had a hell of a time batoning, the swedge chewd my baton, it took forever to get through. It was too thinly ground so it had to be batonned all the way through, unless I twisted it, but thats not a good Idea to do with any knife.

Now, in the time it took to chop one of these in half I could get two done with my ka-bar.

Now for my favorite part about this knife, its cutting efficiency. Making shavings was so easy it wasn't funny, well actually it

was. I had total control over the knife, If I wanted big shavings I got them, same as if I wanted smaller ones. Where as the ka-bar

didn't have as much control, though better than the BK7. The buck reminded me alot of the Revolver H.

Over all I like the ka-bar more, its soots me better and is a fair amount sturdier, holds an edge better and take the abuse. Both knvies started shaving, but only the ka-bar came out with scraping ability. the buck will still cut, but not shaving anymore. In the cutting ability, I like the Buck more, so, If I was taking an axe, I would take the buck. If I was worried about wight I would take the ka-bar and a folding saw.

Great pics and review Fonly! I love the Ka-bar dearly for some reason and would put it in the class of "this knife will do darn near anything you ask of it". There are certainly better knives out there, but for the price, it's hard to beat it. I'm surprised you had as many difficulties as you did with the 119, I wouldn't have suspected it. Thanks again for the great review and pics. -Matt-

yeah the handle on the 119 was so heavy, it really held it back, a did the swedge, it just took all the shock from the baton.

Nice Review Fonly,

I like that first shot with two knives side by each ;) I think it gives away who will take the baton blue ribbon right off.

I never did realize how strikingly similar the Buck specials were in shape and looks to the KaBars though - that shot really points it out. I guess I always looked at kabars as a combat knife and the buck as a hunter.

I agree that the 119 is better suited to cutting tasks. I put a really aggressive bevel on mine and love how it slices!

I have both and I also prefer the Ka-Bar over the Buck 119. Also the Buck handle is a little too short for my hand.

Great review and photos Fonly. These are two timeless classics that continue to prove themselves, as great field knives.

I think this shows the difference between a Hunting knife and a survival knife, I am sure if the contest was game prep, the Buck would have won.

PS: If I took a picture of the side of my firepit on a camping trip it woould look amazingly similar to your firestarting photo, this is a system that works well.

Thanks for the review and the pics. What did you do to that Ka Bar sheath?

Hey, nice pics, and review. I,ve owned both the Buck 119, and camilus USMC, same design as the Ka-Bar. Both are good knives, but the Ka-bar's stacked handle is easier for me to grip. I wish I still had my 119 though. :(

It should be noted that the Buck 119 is not made for that kind of work. It's a skinner, and maybe LIGHT survival work, at best.

Exactly, that why I say if it were paired with a chopper, it would make a fantastic knife. But I like knowing it can do this stuff, wether it does it well is another story:D
