So i am still on the quest for a tough as nails knife...I am still leaning toward RC-3...but i am having trouble getting a good deal online...i saw this knife KA-BAR 1460 IMPACT SPEAR POINT W/ EAGLE SHEATH D2 steel....looks a=like a no nonsense blade....and i saw it for 50 bucks..not bad...what's the peanut gallery think.....anyone no the best deals for Rat knives..?

I think it would be beneficial to you if you save up a little more to get the RC-3. The Kabar is nice but Rat Cutlery has a VERY good warranty on their blades: you break it, just send it in to be fixed or replaced, within reason. You probably couldn't put a price on the assurance their warranty can give you but I wouldn't want to drop some major coin on a Kabar and then have it break on me (not that it wouldn't take anything short of abuse to do that). It seems that other forumites like the RC blades a lot because of their ergonomics and functionality.

The RC-3 is just about the perfect little blade for me. I couldn't ask for any more in a knife of that size. Well worth the price IMO

Can't really speak to the RAT-3, since I only have an RC-4, but I do own the D2 Impact Spear-Point. Kind of a goofy knife. The handle is just too thick and big for a blade as narrow and short as you get. I gave it to Justin Gingrich from Ranger Knives to mod, and now it's a much better balanced, less ridiculous knife, but I still prefer the RC-4 to it hands down. Wish the RCs came in D2, though. :(

I do like the Kabar impact series and I would recommend them to anyone. If its that cheap buy it and try it if you dont like it sell it on the forum and take that money and buy the RAT...Heck I might even get another one

RAT
their 1095 is my favorite steel, hands down
and they have the best warranty and CS in the business
Jeff Mike and Shon Rowen are all awesome guys who post regularly in the RAT forum and are more than willing to help their customers.

I Love Ka Bars and RAT. I think if I had to pick between the 2 for my last knife ever.. I'd go RAT. Warranty Rocks.

I know they are a bit more expensive, but check out knifedestructiontest.com and see what the Busse and Swamp Rat blades can take. He also tests a Kbar...

For whatever my 2 cents are worth!

Just because the knife doesn't hold up against getting pounded with a sledge hammer or batoning through concrete doesn't mean it isn't tough.

since you apparently don't want to spend more than twelve dollars for a knife, I can not recommend the RC-3 to you. they're around a hundred dollars everywhere. it's a really good deal for the knife you get. you're not going to find one for fifty bucks anywhere. but please, feel free to start some more threads asking for the best deal on an RC-3, and the best location to buy one for the best deal, and why they cost so damn much, because each new thread you start is a wellspring of interesting thought and shows what an interesting, thoughtful individual you are.

You really really really want a RAT. There is absolutely no comparison whatsoever--Kabar and RAT don't play in the same sandbox. :D

Yeah this is getting old you've asked what knife to get and have been uniformly unhappy or shifty about the answer. this is a forum for people who love knives. everybody here is willing to shell out the money for a quality tool dependant upon what they can afford. no one here is going to recommend that you go to chinatown and pick up a 6 dollar speacial.

you get what you pay for so get a RAT already:D

Amen. How many repetitive threads are started every week asking for a "tough as nails" knife for $50 or less. I'm wondering what these folks are doing with their knives that require them to be "tough as nails". Chopping concrete? Prying ammo crates open? cutting into cars to help trapped accident victims? Go to Home Depot and spend $10 on a Stanley prybar then run one edge on a bench grinder for 5 minutes. Problem solved.
