If it USMC pattern it has a rectangular tang to the buttcap. Does yours have leather washers as a grip? You can shape them with abrasive, and colour the leather if you wish. I think they are a great knife. I got a well looked after, issued one after searching for nearly 12 months.
I don't know much about the bowie but I have a ton of experience with the usmc ka-bar.i own 2 and beat the heck out of them all of the time.good edge retention and easy to sharpen.
i paracord wrapped my handle for grip. The tang narrows at the butt and is only wide enough to accept the pin for the butt cap.
To make a potentially long review short they're an exelent bush/survival blade. You won't have any regrets buying one.
I like the idea of a short Ka-Bar rehandle. I hate and have no use for the full guard, I thought it might be nice to do a custom micarta handle replacement with a stainless finger guard and skull crusher pommel.
cmott69 - i have the short heavy bowie coming. you can probably cut or grind off the handle. the tang in the handle looks like it will probably be about 1/2" wide. grinding down the handle to fit could be a possibility. i will have to see when i get mine.
