I was wondering how this Gerber compared to the Buck Kaala. I know the steel is different. If any of you own both models I'd love to hear your opinions.
They are completely different knives. I have both and the Kaala is a basic style neck knife. The Gerber Cliplock is a little larger and heavier and was never designed as a neck knife. The Cliplock is'nt a comfortable knife to use IMO. It was designed as a kyak/ canoe or diving knife and the sheath was designed to attach to a flotation vest.
I have'nt really used mine enough to judge edge holding. It was a gift (I'm not a neck knife guy) so it has only sat in a desk drawer and opened some envelopes. I have considered getting a kydex belt sheath made for it and carry it that way as I think it would work well as a small hunting/caping/utility knife. I also think some micarta or G10 scales would also make it more usable.
