KA-BAR BK11CSM Becker Necker arrived today. Grind was a bit funky from the belly to the tip, bit uneven. Nothing I couldn't easily reprofile with the Edge Pro if I wanted to. Edge was pretty sharp, sharp enough to shave. 30 seconds on the Sharpmaker it's hair popping now, with very little pressure. Very nice.
Another noteworthy feature, is how tight the sheath is. When I first tried to put the knife inside the sheath, right away I felt how snug it was. Once the knife got to the finger guard, it stopped. Refusing to "snap in". Honestly, I didn't try super hard to force it in, I just set the tip of sheath on the floor and pushed with both hands. Wasn't difficult then. After that initial resistance, it wasn't hard at all to withdraw / re-sheath the blade. I was very pleased to see when locked into the sheath, the friction fit remained perfect. No play inside the sheath whatsoever. I wouldn't hesitate to sky-dive with this knife. There's NO way the blade's coming out, unless I intend it to.
Very happy with the BK11. Wish my Eskabar was this tight in the sheath. Perhaps I just got lucky with this one...
EDIT: All nice and well.... except, as I was studying the blade, I began to notice how poor the grind was near the butt. Then again near the choil. From a distance the knife looks all nice and fine. But up close, under inspection. It's got some of the sloppiest grinds I've seen.
To be honest, it doesn't bother me that much. It's going to be a working knife, not a safe queen. However, it's something I can't really ignore either. One of my most expensive Kabars too. Here, judge for yourself.
