Kabar bowie breaking question

Yeah, that isn't supposed to happen. I have the Larger Heavy Bowie, and it has gone through some tough pieces of wood. I would be surprised if Ka-Bar refused to replace it.

Granted, it is true that batoning is pretty rough on a knife, especially when you find a nice tough knot that traps the blade against it and won't budge. Not hard to break knives that way, and the Heavy Bowie, while not tempered particularly hard, has a relatively thin grind for a heavy use knife.

What you don't understand is that if you are chopping or even hammering a blade through concrete the concrete is chipping away or shattering but if you are trying to force the blade through a very tough knot in wood the knot does not chip or shatter instead it grabs and holds the blades edge allowing the blade itself to bend at an angle and when you smack the blade while the edge is being held it will break! You cannot compare an intentional d test to actual knife failure in the field because the circumstances are very different and a tough knot holding the hardened edge of a knife edge is many times tougher than concrete.

What I do understand is I saw Noss do the same test with a Cheaper Than Dirt "rough use knife" that cost about $9.99 on their web site and it survived most of the test! At least the it didn't break like the Ka-Bar did while batoning. I mean really,,,something is wrong when a piece of crap $9.99 knife survives a test that a much higher price knife could not. No,, I think I'll pass on the Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie, at least for now anyway. I might just order 4 of the "rough use knives" for the same price as one Ka-Bar cost. At least I won't have to worry about them breaking while being a little rough & tough on them! :D

I contacted Kabar and send it in. Recently I received an email, there reaction is that the heat treatment wasn’t complete correctly. The blade will be replaces by Kabar. Nice service!!

Nice to hear they are going to replace it for you. Also nice to hear the outcome. Hope this one will serve you better.
