KaBar Camp Knife again- Talk me out of it?

Hello again-

Same bat time, same bat channel. That darn knife I handled a couple of weeks ago is still on my mind, which is generally my test to see how much I really am interested in something. Felt like a fun blade to have around!

I've asked around and found a couple of people who have one, and they have really liked theirs. That's pretty much the only 'support' I need to convince me to pick one up!

But as a last ditch to save my credit card from catching fire, does anyone want to try and talk me out of one?

I'm aware of the stick tang and hollow grind, and the guard would be ground off pretty quickly.

Pro's are cool recurve body, 1095 instead of stainless, and I'm comfy with KaBar's quality level.

The only thing I see that would be a problem would be how to sharpen it in the field, but other than that I would get it.

...Okay, how about something longer, thinner, cheaper & more machete-like instead?

That having been said, if you have the bug for the KaBar, maybe you should just get it :D.

Its a K-bar that should be enough. At least its a larger blade.

Not a fan.

Hey you asked.

It's got a recurve blade and a top guard. These two things are deal breakers for me.

But, kabar makes a good knife; the coating on my Combat-Utility knife is super tough; and 1095 is pretty good steel.

i tried one of these "talk me out of this knife" threads a couple of weeks ago, and had great results

1095 is okay.

minor cons:
pommel construction
guard

major cons:
hollow ground (huge one)
recurve (annoying to sharpen, doesn't add much to perfomance, awkward use)

pros:
nothing significant

On strictly practical point of view can't see why one would prefer that to a more straight forward design such as an Ontario Rat (would have added Beckers but they are no longer available) or equivalent.

The more I think about it. I would get it to beat the living snot out of it and not care.

Reflections of Asia has some great hand forged, user grade bolos for $30 shipped. That will be a little easier on your credit card.:D

Maybe a better choice would be Marine combat bowie from ontario knife company? For the ease of sharpening.

I picked up a ka-bar heavy bowie a few weeks back. The 9" blade version. It's not for my general purpose camping, but I like it. For general camping I'd take my SOG Seal Pup Elite, or something else in the 4-5" range.

Don't buy. Ethan Becker has joined with Ka-Bar. Wait and see what new knives (designed by him ) are released by Ka-Bar.

Don't do it ,you'll enjoy the knife to much until the credit card bill comes ,and try to explain why it is maxed out again and your honey can't use the card scenario always works !!
