Hey guys I am looking to buy a general all use fixed blade (mostly for camping and hiking) and was looking into the Kabar USMC 7". Now i know there are tons of better knives but I want to go with a very simple proven knife here. Give me your opinions/expierences with this knife. thanks

It's a proven design, light and easy to carry and sharpen.

Check out Ka-Bar's Beckers, Knives don't get much tougher or proven than that. The BK7 Might be something you want to check out

yea i was looking into that. it seems like the most simple tough design out there in terms of knives, but I still like the classic Kabar style more.

I think it's fine for what you are looking for, especially if you can get them for a decent price, either on line or at a surplus store. It will serve you well if you understand it's limitations - like any knife!

Go for it then, the Classic Ka Bar has been tested and proven tough through war and peace, definitely an icon in both the knife world and American culture.

I have both the BK7 and the USMC. I couldn't NOT have the classic USMC knife with the leather handle. It is just to good of a design. If I had to pick the "better" all purpose knife, it would be the BK7. With that said, I don't think anyone would be in the right to criticize the functionality and proven effectiveness of the USMC KA-BAR. Other knives may have improved upon the design, but that doesn't make it flawed or less efective in anyway.

I appreciate the look and materials of the classic leather handled Kabar (just got one recently). I think one drawback is not being able to grip it so that your thumb is along the base of the spine due to the guard. It makes up for it by its length and toughness.

I rarely need a knife that big -- my Dozier K1 does everything I need it for when backpacking. K-Bars are cool though -- if weight is a concern (backpacking) there is a smaller version,

Get one. That thing is a classic for a reason. It performs well and looks outstanding. What's not to like? :)

Mine has been passed down to my son. It has been beaten on and sharpened many times and continues to perform. Fabulous knife at a good price.

Choosing between a becker and a USMC kabar is like choosing between a 2010 mustang and a 69 mustang, both are awesome but you know you want the classic. of course I'm a bit biased since I served in the Marines

Good analogy there.

If that feature is really important to you, why don't you simply cut or grind off the top of the guard?

Great comment!

After I got the KaBar full size tanto, I knew I just had to get the classic USMC KaBar Fighting Knife. No two ways about it. And then, once it came a few days ago, I set to making it mine, by beating it up a bit. Having shown it to a few friends, several thought it was an old knife, one said from the Vietnam era.

Here are a few pics of it now:

Yes, that is a solution I was already aware of, just pointing it out. It's not that important to me as I like it the way it is.

Just think about this for a second. These large Bowie type knives were used by people that thought that old west towns (population 43) were too conjested and they just had to get away from it all and go up in the mountains. The knives had to take the place of many tools that the average farmer would have in his barn. But because they had what they can carry or could strap to a horse, this had to be a bomb proof versatile design that lasts and lasts and lasts.

In modern times, the only group that endures anything comparable to this is our military troops that are cast out in hostle places with minimal equipment. In such places, you will find more USMC Ka-Bars than just about any other knife. Sure things like the "Buckmaster" comes and goes but through it all, the Ka-Bar just keeps trucking along. It is hard for average Joe to imagine all the things these knives are asked to do by our troops. They cut, dig, smach, pry, stab, get dropped, run over, thrown and much much more. Even beyond that, most of these hard working USMC Ka-Bars do their tour of duty with honor and then get passed down to the next generation still intact! Nothing fancy, it is just a tool that does what it is advertised to do, and then some.

So as for your question about a "better" knife?. In another hundred years we can look back at what our troops take to battle and see if one stands out more than the USMC Ka-Bar has for the last hundred years. My guess is that the space Marines will still have a Ka-Bar straped to their gear!

Bill, thanks for that! What a great tribute not just to the USMC Ka-Bar, but to our Marines and other troops who go in harm's way to preserve our way of life, and be the ones who "fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean" and yes, Marines will tell you: "We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marine." One of the points made in your post is that this knife is found in hostile environments where minimal equipment is the rule. Of course the knife is good, and so versatile that Marines' willingly choose to depend on it. They could choose a bigger, heavier, stronger knife if they wished. However... the balance of this knife is right behind the guard, the pommel is just the right size if you are to flip the knife from forward to reverse grip to easily retain it. That blade is bad... it sharpens easily and is very tough, from what I've heard. Those leather handles are great, especially if roughed up. What a knife...

And there's another thing. Of those who have seen the knife whose picture I posted up above, there's no doubt that this knife is "a real knife" and it elicits the most incredible comments, some of them very politically incorrect and which I'll not quote here. Gotta love it.

I carried one when in the field while serving in the Marines. It's a good sound design, tough, light, good steel, holds a decent edge, and is easy to sharpen. It makes a great packing blade.Pair that with a folding saw, like a Silky, and you're good to roll.

Since getting my USMC KaBar, every person that I've handed it too has smiled or grinned once they hold it. There's just something about the knife, absolutely fantastic.

folderguy that looks awesome! What did you use for the patina? Mustard? I need to get mine with a more respectable finish than the black coating it has now.
