i just got a short kabar for my dad. it is a great little knife, but it didn't even come close to having an edge out of the box. anybody else's really dull NIB? it sharpened up great, though i won't test edge holding since it is a gift. any comments on edge holding appreciated. and how is the next generation line? haven't heard too much about them lately.

The next generatoin line is GREAT. I have the next generation ka-bar and love it ten times more than my USMC ka-bar. cant go wrong with a ka-bar. Geoff.

I have the USMC-K-Bar but it is just for looks since I can't get to the field any more. I also have a Air force pilot survival knife and I used it all the time in the field and loved it. It was very easy to touch up in the field and stayed sharp for a couple of Steal Head fish.Any time there is a lull in activity you can touch the blade and make it shaving sharp with a diamond stone, that is made by EZ lap. They sell for abouot 19.00$ and are very light to carry on the belt.

I love the Ka-Bars, both generations. For the money, the 1217 USMC is one heck of a knife, not to mention the historical/nostalgia factor.

You're right,Gunner, you can't go wrong with a Ka-Bar.

Yeah, my wife's 3/4 version USMC Kabar was very dull NIB. It didn't take much to put a razor edge on it with the Sharpmaker. As for edge holding, I've sharpened it a few times since she's had it but it hasn't really needed it. She mainly uses it around the house and yard; it also hits the woods when we go hiking/camping. USMC Kabars are one of the best values on the knife market IMHO.
