Kainuun Puukko???

Yes. But I would still be interested in more.

Hi folks. Nice thread. Thanks for bringing Kainuun to our attention. I have an interest in Scandinavians: in fact, it was a Helle Eggen that got my interest in knives going several years ago.

I haven't seen 'silver steel' in these parts yet. Googled it (of course), but why does Kainuun use it? Is it used by other Scandi bladesmiths?

I think silver steel is quite common in Finnish puukkos, and several very skilled artisans use it for blades. I believe it is good for hand forging.

Kainuun does offer their blades on the website for about 50 euros each. This is not a common brand I have seen in the US, but they seem to offer a nice selection with beautiful sheaths on their website.

Nice looking knives, but for just a small amount more you could buy a true custom puukko from a good bladesmith.

Silver steel is a commercial name, coming from the silvery finish the round bar already has, for Bohler K510. Steels with the same or very close composition called silver steel were once the first choice for European straight razors, given the glossy polish and extremely keen edge it can get.

It's a rather common steel to be used on handforged puukkos for the same reasons.
