No, Rodney King was drunk at the time of the beating and not high on PCP. Although he had a prior conviction for PCP Possession or Distribution in the past. As far as I know, he was only under the influence of alcohol. The moment PCP got mentioned, everything flew out the window. As I said, he had a history of PCP use, but was drunk at the time.
Alcohol is a depressant and while it has some effect on how pain is registered, it is not an anesthetic. Alcohol can cause violent and psychotic reactions in some people (obviously), however, it is not as bad as PCP.
PCP (phencyclidine hydrochloride) is a failed anesthetic in the medical world, it caused violent, psychotic reactions and hallucinations. Like I said, he had a history of it, but I do not remember it being reported or a part of the trial that he was under the influence of it at the time.
You should protect your head and not rush in to get it bashed. The point about grapplers entering stick fighting matches and utilizing the armor to close and grapple is called dishonesty. I look at people with no stick skills entering something like that and utilizing protective equipment to make an ass out of someone else (and that is what they are tying to do) as just being deficient in character. On the street, they may or may not win. If they took a solid shot to the eyes with a rattan stick, do they really think they would be grappling for long? If someone tried to rush me and all I had was a stick, I would try the largo shot to their eyes, and if they still closed and went low to shootfight, I would drop the punyo, the butt of the stick right on the base of their skull and then transition to Dos Manos and break their neck, whatever was available. Think of the position the "shootfighter" would be in at that moment. I would have his back.
Grappling is the rage now because of No Holds Barred (NHB), UFC-type matches. It is not the epitome of combat nor is it the panacea of self-defense. It is great when you are one on one against an unarmed attacker. You add weapons or another unarmed attacker. Everything changes.
And are there really any truly No Holds Barred matches? Technically speaking, No Holds Barred, O.K., then there are. However, there are no "No Techniques Barred" matches or someone would have already lost an eyeball as soon as they mounted someone else. Come on.
If you invest a lot of time in that type of training, that is O.K., but don't look at a UFC Match as being the street, because the street does not suffer a fool. The street is hard and littered with broken glass, gravel, syringes, all sorts of nastiness that negates the fantasy and hype regarding the promotion of an effective style of Martial Art. It is effective, but it is not the whole world. The world is full of weapons and multiple attackers, pack attacks, and dangerous dogs as well.
You cannot control range because not everyone is afraid of your weapon, some won't even respect it. They will charge you, you have to deal with that. Yes, it is very dangerous, be that as it may, you still have to deal with these things. So, I am not an advocate of "sniping" with a knife, that is, staying at Largo range. Violent people have a funny way of making all the hypothetical situations go right in the toilet.
Ambushes happen. You cannot always walk in a well-lit area. You cannot always avoid people.
I have heard people say, "If there are some punks up ahead, cross the street way before you get to them."
You now look like elusive food. Congratulations! With some Gangbangers, you might have insulted them by doing this, "ya diss'ed me yo..." It is not as easy as awareness and avoidance. Some folks have to go where others do not.
There are techniques regarding ambushes. It is called, "Get the fook outta Dodge." Or, you are going to have to beat off the attack and draw. Very important skills to have.
