Kama handle ideas.

I'll be forging a Kama for someone soon and I am trying to decide on materials. I've never worked Micarta, so I don't know if it's suitable for a handle, but I like the idea of it. Japanese White Oak seems common for traditional Kama, but Hickory seems like a good choice. I don't know that he plans on using it for, but I am going to be sure he won't throw it.

So, Micarta or wood?

Thanks.

I agree with Frank, not traditional but would be awesome. Though kama are usually VERY light and I think micarta might be a bit heavy.

A pair of kama should have some type of non slip material for handles. My experience with them is in kata, where they are used in sets. They are very light in the hand and they can get away from you when performing. Even using a single weapon I would want the handle to afford a non slippery grip. They are used in both a hooking and arc style swing.

I've used them throughout the years as both tools and as a weapon, they are honestly one of my favourites. I plan to do a wrap on the handle for a better grip, but I just want to be sure it's suitable in this context. Is Dymondwood a better option? Again, never used these materials.
