Kami Marks - prefer dot style or the old carved style?

I prefer carved. I have a few that are dotted and one or two are kind of messy, surely it can't take THAT much longer to carve the kami mark in right? Is it a time thing or a tool/fatigue thing I wonder.

I wonder what te kamis prefer, while the carving may take more time and work, maybe some prefer carved and others dotted? While I do prefer carved for look and I feel it makes it seem like a more prideful mark after such hard work.

I think the carving adds more of an authentic look than the computerized looking dots. It's like getting an authentic autograph on your favorite baseball card versus initials.

Just curious to know how the kamis feel.

I prefer the carved.
And I can see most of you do too.
I think the kamis are doing it because punching dots is probably quicker, but I don't know as yet for sure.

I'm due to talk to Auntie as soon as she has time and I'm going to speak to her about this issue and see if we can get the kamis to go back to the cleaner looking carved.

I'd say that like most of you I also prefer the carved symbols. It took me awhile to figure out that Sher had made my new M-43. That said, there really isn't anything wrong with it being done in electric pencil. If anything, it helps to date the work so that in 20 years time you'll know which era your blade is from.

I much prefer the carved marks. However, Steely raises an interesting issue about what era a blade is from. It would be nice if the kamis could also engrave the date on each knife -- not the exact date, but just the year. I often find myself wondering what vintage a blade is from, especially the older blades made by kamis who are no longer with HI. I realize it would be one more task for kamis who are already busy, but it would be a plus. It could be simplified to a 2-digit date for knives made between 2000 and 2099. :)

That would be great Karda! Thank you!!!

Kamidog.....you wished to see some engraving. I never claimed I was a good engraver.

Man! That's some serious inlaying too. Beautifully done. No easy feat that for sure. Took some time to I reckon.

Like many others, I prefer carved. I have to admit, I was a little bit disappointed to see the dots on my recently purchased first kukri. Wondered at first if it was because mine was a villager finish. Ultimately, it's not a huge deal. Perhaps leave it up to kamis.

carved symbols/markings are the way to go...appears to be a bit more authentic and perhaps more difficult to set in..

EGAD! Man that is beautiful work. Call it engraving carving whatever you want but thats is saweet! Is that a Sharps coffee grinder?

beautiful work bookie-- and I have to agree with everyone here, the old cut marks look so much better, but we all understand that the punch dots save time--- though I think it would be beyond cool if they would go back to the carve :D, especially with all the new guys I understand the punches, but as they have gained time in the business, think its pretty reasonable to ask for them to do the carving again.

I prefer the carved as well, I feel the marks/dots lack character, I like the carved for the that reason it gives a more of a custom final finish to the blade and there is no confusing who it is from. Just my humble opinion. And dang Bookie you are the man!!

I sent Auntie an email this morning on this issue and she admits she doesn't care for the punched (dotted) kami marks either and is letting the shops know that we prefer them to go back to the old way of marking the blades.
