I had said in this thread, that my wife and I were going to go on a Kampsville run, to see if the leaves looked nice. They did, and here's some photos.

This is heading to Kampsville, via Carrolton, Illinois. The usual flat corn and bean land, then all of a sudden you drive through a tunnel of trees, to get to the bottom of the river valley. Photo was taken through the windshield, so bear with me:

Once you get to the bottom, this is what it looks like, driving to the other side of the valley, to Kampsville:

Took this photo of the Kampsville shoreline, while waiting for the ferry to take us across:

Photos taken while on the ferry boat:

We decided to take a route I have frequented in the past, kind of between Kampsville, and Pearl, Illinois, through the country:

Couple miniature horses we came across:

Damn jets were out full force again today:

Saw a tree full of turkey buzzards. Was trying to get a photo of them spreading their wings, sunning themselves, but the were spooked every time I got out of the truck:

John Deere combine. Looks small here, but was pretty cool in real life:

A tree in Hamburg, Illinois, atop a hill:

South of Hamburg, overlooking the Mississippi river valley:

A few shots out the window, going down the road back toward Hardin. Some of my photos have a bit of motion blur from shooting like this:

Along the Great River Road, near Pere Marquette State Park:

Not a good photo, but a house on top of the bluff, overlooking Grafton, Illinois. Grafton is where the Illinois, and Mississippi rivers meet:

A photo going through town. The cars went all the way through town, and about a mile on out of town. It's a hot tourist destination. Old Settlers Days was going on, but also it's a biker mecca:

Murph, I was telling you over the phone, how nice it was between Grafton, and Alton Illinois, with the bluffs on one side, and the Mississippi on the other. Here's a few photos, taken out the windshield:

A church I thought looked cool in Elsah, Illinois. The architecture in this town is outstanding. Here's a history, but also, if you Google image Elsah, Illinois, you'll see some of the unique houses and building, made out of a local quarry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elsah,_Illinois

Had a great day again. Just about a 200 mile all rounder. Looking forward to camping next weekend. I love this kind of weather. Was 76° here today, but love the Fall in general.

I love your pictures, they really show how awesome Fall is :) Also looks like you and your wife had an awesome time.

Awesome photos, as usual.
Pretty interesting to see the difference between the leaves in yesterday's Starved Rock thread, and this.
I need to take a road trip.

Thanks guys, appreciate it.

I think last weekend would have been the best time to go. We're hoping that even further south will still have some color next weekend.

I lived in Illinois for twenty years and never visited any of the towns in this week's post. Keep 'em coming. :)

Cool pictures.

I attended a week long archaeological dig at the old site at Kampsville in 1975. I personally found a post hole and an obsidian shard.

Thanks for taking me back to those days.

Must have been the famous Koster Site. Oh wait, the Koster Site wasn't actually in Kampsville.

Kampsville is a little (typical) bar town.

The digs were in cornfields by the river. Anyone who has dug there would know this.

It was the old Koster site.

Great photos warrior! I've wanted to drive Alton run for a while now, but will make a point of it next time we drive down that way. I usually want to stop at GP Knives, so I miss that road.

I was thinking the Koster Site was on the Eldred blacktop. We went there for a 5th grade field trip. It was fascinating, even as a child.

Thanks. Beautiful area, for sure. My wife and I probably head that way damn near once a month. Kampsville is just an hour drive from home, Alton about the same.

We stayed in Kampsville - I remember it was a town with two bars and a ferry - not much else.

I can't name the roads - I was in 8th grade and we were there for a week. We would ride the bus out to the dig, dig all day, and ride back to town.

I am 50 now, so it made an impression on me, but I am sure it has changed a lot.

My hats' off to you if you can remember the name of roads from when you were in 5th grade. ;^)

No reason to edit you're post. I obviously can't remember the name of the road from 5th grade. My memory of this is from about 10 years ago, when I asked the people that worked at the archaeological center where the dig was at. They thought it was on Eldred road, but nobody could remember where exactly. But now, after Googling it, it was indeed on Eldred road. Like I said before, we go to this area all the time. My memory is not just from a child. ;)

Awesome pics Warrior! Years ago when my wife and I where first married I used to spend a lot of time with her father commercial fishing the Ohio river in a little river town by the name of Patriot In. Unfortunately (and a long story) that whole eara of my life went bad due to some trouble my father in law got into and I havent been back for years. Your pics remind me a lot of that place and remind me of fonder memoiries! THANKS FOR POSTING.

Awesome pictures! Seeing all that makes me miss IL just a little bit... Have you ever made it down south more to Garden of the Gods? That place was amazing! I lived up near Belleville, so flat land corn and beans was mostly all I saw for a couple of years, then I went to Garden of the Gods, the most beautiful land in IL in my opinion!

I live in central Illinois as well (Springfield), and have been through Grafton many times...mostly for the wineries, LOL. Such beautiful scenery down in the Grafton-Alton areas. Thanks for those pics!

I have never been there, no. Wife and I were planning on going this year. We're going camping next weekend, and we talked about driving on down there.

It is quite a sight to see... We camped right down the road at a place called Pine Ridge (Pounds Hollow Recreation Area) A lot of tall pines, but plenty of hardwoods to see the fall colors. Probably a little colder this time of year, but there is a nice little lake in the campground with a nice walk out sandy beach area. On the 2 days we were there, I must have seen about 50 or so deer, mostly around the lake but a couple came right through our site during dinner.

Yeah, that's just east of Garden of the Gods. Perhaps I should check that out.
