Thats the sound my vfd made when it blew up! Sounded like a 38 going off in my shop! I dropped the blade I was grinding and jumped back a couple feet before I realized what it was. 17 blades on the bench and no grinder:( And to add to the frustration I called Rob Frink to order one of his drives and he's out of the shop till Monday. AARRGGGHHH! I'm going to go hit the bag for a few rounds so I can cool off. Then I guess I'll be using the downtime to clean up the shop and reorganize. It needed a good straightening up anyway.........

dang Rick
that sux, it's the only bad side of a drive other than
one drive used for a few other tools / Motors.. if mine goes I'm out my
Mill , one of my band saws and my Surface grinder.. I hope you get a fix soon

That sucks! Was there a little mushroom cloud above it? I've noticed that this stuff happens when you need something the most. It's kind of like Murphy's Law.

"The likelihood of a machine tool to break down is directly proportional to the need to use that machine." (A Scott Ickes quote)

Dang. I bet that did make you jump. LOL. Time for a beer.

Does anyone know where Rick could get his VFD fixed if he so chose?

My first thought was that if it blew once, in such a short time, will it happen again? Maybe time for a better vfd.

I would think an electronics shop could fix it for him. I would suspect that the main damage would be rather evident. I would be interested in it if he doesn't want to have it repaired. Make me a deal. LOL

I'm sure the manufacture, if it's worth fixing, would rebuild it.. or maybe discount a new one if they can't

Which VFD is it? Make/model?

Yeah it sucks, but what are you gonna do? It's a nema1 enclosure that I knew in the back of my mind might be a problem. I have really good dust collection system, had a filter around it and had it mounted high and away from the grinder. I figured my setup might avoid the pitfalls of nema1, but no go. I talked to Rob this morning and a new nema4 KB is on the way:D Thanks Rob! Frank and ib2v4u, the company I bought it from said throw it in the trash. Loud kapow and a flash of light aren't fixable, LOL. The lesson for me is buy the good stuff once, the first time, and be done with it. I bought this unit 'cause of the price even though I knew better. Sometimes trying to save some bucks cost more in the long run. Live and learn.......Rick
