A new steel recently became available and it is called 26C3. It has a very high carbon content of 1.26%, a low Mn content of 0.3%, and a low Cr content of 0.3%, and little else. Chuck, the distributor who provides the steel came up with the name "Spicy White", and in Japanese that is roughly translated "Karai Shirogami" (spicy white paper). It gets harder than woodpecker's lips out of the quench. This petty knife has been hardened and tempered for a hardness of 64-65HRC. The handle is made from a gorgeous piece of quilted maple, purple heart, and G10 white spacers and liners. The blade is full flat ground to a very thin edge and hand rubbed to 800 grit. "S Davenport" maker's mark on the left side of the blade, and "White" for a steel identification on the right side. Balance point is just forward of the front handle pin. Of course, technically speaking it isn't "White" steel (Hitachi Shirogami), but the steel composition is extremely close. I love using petty knives. They're just big enough to do most kitchen cutting chores. I'd love to hang this one on our magnetic knife bar, but I want someone else to enjoy using the blade on this petty.

Thanks Robert! I forgot to mention that there is no flex in the blade, in case that is a concern for some. It's pretty rigid, even with the distal taper and thin grind.
