One more thing Dan...

Might I be able to convince you to cut a batch of aluminum (or even HDPE?) trainer blade blanks for those of us who order one of these knives? I know we could do this ourselves by using your drawing as a template (and in all liklihood that's what will happen), but I'm curious if you'd be interested doing in something like this at the same time the "real" blade blanks are being cut.

Yeah....kinda has to have the ring. :D

I would definitely be interested in cutting some aluminum trainers. I can do them with or without grinds, and definitely rounded. ;)

Yes - thanks for asking.

I've made a few changes, gone back and forth with some things....

I think the jimping at the ring should be moved further out on the ring itself. When held in a reverse grip (which most karambits are used in) the thumb would be higher in the ring I think.

Also, the swedge will not be sharpened, right?

This may be sacralig and perhaps I should expect The Spanish Inquisition (though noone expects the spanish inquisition...) I would rather have the ring at the blade end of the handle. I am not a fan a karambit knives so perhaps this in not a welcome viewpoint.

Moving the ring would change it from a k'bit to a different type of knife. Also I might add I've never found a point in having a ring at the front of the handle as its not really that practical.

But I do agree on moving jimping higher onto the ring, or at the least extending it onto the ring.

Hrm I was looking at the revised image and I'm wondering about the choil. It seems almost a bit one the small and "not so forgiving" side for people not familiar with it [k'bit].

You may want to make a blank/trainer and then chalk the blade right infront of the choil and spin it a bit and act like you were cutting some things, if you end up getting chalk on your finger...well then thats a boo-boo and it might want to go a haaaair bigger just to give some buffer for people not so familiar with the blade. I'm not talking a massive size change, but rather just a tiny little bit larger...again its all about feel and without actually holding one I can't tell.

Can't say for sure as the plywood I cut (printed > cardboard > plywood) just doesn't have the "feel" to determine it (and not to mention I snapped the sucker in half).

Also if I could offer a suggestion about the grip covering...I've ended up using skateboard tape wrapped around the handle on others to add to the "tack" when wearing gloves. I've always considered going ape on a bicycle inner-tube and making a rubberized grip, if and when you find the right balance on the blade and start playing with the grip material if you could try out a few options like paracord, wood, micarata, and if at all possible a rubberized grip of some sort. Just play around with handle materials before you finalize the design as the grip takes almost as much thought as the blade itself!

(Finding a k'bit balance is tricky as heck as different people have different tastes in slick/tack [spinning/actual use] and finding that balance is a hard thing, most people around here it would be actual use and not much spinning so I'd lean towards more of a "tack" grip but again finding a balance the feels good and provides enough tack to stay in the hand when needed is key)

As an aside but potentially helpful to someone. If you are interested in a Karambit but have not owned or tried one out you might want to invest in one of the plastic ones by Cold Steel first. It is a pretty minimal investment and should let you get a feel for this type of knife. Although Dan's design is much different and likely handles much differently the cold steel plastic version could still be useful.

Dan,

I LOVE IT! ! !

Put me on the list. I was just surfing the internet for my ideal karambit and I just decided to quit for the evening. Came to this forum because I've been debating on pulling the trigger on ordering one of your nessmuks when I found this thread.

This is just my personal preference, but if I were designing my ideal karambit I would sharpen the recurved spine portion of the blade or at least grind it so that it can be sharpened. I love your present design, but I think this would make it a wicked blade.

Put me down for one either way!

I just need to get through my existing orders first and then I'll get on it. Probaly in Feb/March

Any more suggestions/input?

Dan
