Karambit doubt

I carry my 5.11 karambit or an Emerson combat karambit almost daily. I do not carry them for any cutting tasks. I keep them for back-up self defense only. I carry an additional lightweight folder for cutting tasks.......something like a Spyderco Endura (waved), FRN Merlin, etc.

If you want a folding karambit that you can use for daily cutting tasks then try to find some of the discontinued models like the Emerson Commander karambit, CQC-7 tanto karambit, or the Bullnose karambit. Those are all excellent daily EDC choices for general cutting.

I am not sure if this kind of blade is the best for and EDC carrying talking about the cutting tasks ( Cutting Apple, Oranges, Watermelon, Lime, open boxes, cutting rope, etc and self defense scenarios ).

Karambit for watermelon? :jerkit: What were you thinking? Not a style I'd pick as an EDC for GP or utility use. It's designed for certain SD situations but you really should get trained in its use if you want to get the best out of it for that purpose - and make sure you understand the legal ramifications if you do carry it for SD.

It's great for self defense, cutting rope and opening boxes. If you wanna cut food, use a kitchen knife.

I know what you are telling me, I just like to use my EDC´s knives, I do not want to have a > 100.00 dlls knife with out of use, just carried in the pocket just for SD ( Thanks God I never had to use a knife in a SD situation ) but I really want to be ready if needs to use it.

About the use that I give to my knives ... for example I received a Cold Steel Ak47 and we had to prepare a breakfast for 500 people so I had to cut like a 10 melons, 10 pineapples, 100 sausage, some tomatoes, etc. in the place that we were doing the breakfast does not has a sharp kitchen knives, so that is why I use my EDC knife to do the work done.

Even in my house I prefer to use my EDC just to take a little practice in order to take it out, open it, griping and cuting anything that I need to cut.

Just the way I use my EDC´s....

And yes because of the curve blade I have my Spyderco Wave Endura in my strong side ( left ) and the Kbit in my weak side ( right ), when I feel that my Kbit training is enough I am going to change sides in order to have it in my strong side.

the shape of the karambit allows it to do some task very well, and makes it perform poorly in others. For opening packages or cutting tape or rope, it does the job nicely. But slicing fruit, bread or meat on a chopping board isn't what its made for.

What the karambit excels in is extremely close quarter cutting and ripping in SD. It's one of the the best grappling / trapping knives. The ring virtually eliminates the risk of dropping the weapon due to stress. So carry it for SD and some EDC tasks but understand that it has strengths and weaknesses.

I also EDC an Endura wave, which I rotate with a 5.11 journeyman.

In the US, dealers cant sell the fox folder with the wave since emerson patented it...so I couldnt find one, but it looks VERY VERY similar to the emerson. I may even like it more since I like my fox fixed a lot. Let me know how you like the fox waved folder when you get it, and if you have had your hands on the emerson, a little comparison would be awesome. Thanks!!

I know that Emerson gave Fox a license to produce the Wave for their special forces folder, so it's not like they are ripping off the patent. You might be right about not being able to sell it in the US but I haven't heard that for certain. It is a very good SD blade style. Even for people who don't really ever train with a knife. Everyone can get good results with simple slashing motions. I see very limited food prep uses for mine, but utility tasks
like cardboard and rope are a breeze. I have a bullnose also but don't think it would be any better for food because of the wide, short profile.

How should one go about cutting a wave into a 5.11 karambit? I don't have a lot of tools at home so this is going to require a home depot run... details please.
Thx, Bryan

I am going to have my Kbit ( Master 5.11 or Fox-479 ) for SD and a Vixtorinox One Handed Treker or my Spyderco Wave Endura for the cutting chores ....

Thank you for your advise .... sharing the expirience is the best of this kind of forums ... talk about real things ....

thank you again.

Welcome To BF. I am well known here for waving knives. I replied to you via email. Call me and I'll give you as much advice on DIY waving as I can.

The krambit was designed primarily for a specific style of knife fighting. It was not meant to be a utility knife.

karabits look vicious.my outlook;if h2o gets muddy; if bit hangs up in ribs or web canvas then you can be compromised .broken finger .worst lose whole self.straight edge more tactical@do 100,s of tasks better.

For the ones who wants a fast deployment with out waving the 5.11

I was browsing and I found a fast deploymen kbit seath, it is not for the 5.11 but I think I saw in the www.karambit.com a seath ( out of stock ) like this ....

This Kbit ( Bengal ) from Tom Kyle ( http://cuttersknifentool.com ) are great ... and I love the fast deployment seath too ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oRVPByYZ0Y

I am thinking to do something like this seath .... I have some kydex and the press so I will try to do something like that ....

Do you know where can I buy the Tarani 5.11 seath ?

karambit looks scary. scary doesnt mean it will get task done. useless on any but people.have any one thought what happens if it hangs between ribs or a key chain.web or canvas; leather etc. least is a broken finger; worst iose it all .straight knife for me everytime. anyway can you clean fish or game?

The sheath idea looks pretty interesting. I really like my Cutters Knife & Tool Bengal karambit. I think karambit.com is not really doing much these days. Thay haven't updated that site in a long time and none of the blades have been in stock for what seems like forever!

I have never seen a sheath for the Tarani karambit. I'm sure someone can make one that will work.

Are you saying a straight blade knife will "NEVER" get hung up on anything?

I agree that a lot of karambits are sold every day because they look "scary" and it takes specialized training to get the best out of them. However, I think they are still a valid choice for self-defence (if not for EDC general utility).

Any knife can get hung up or stuck if targets are chosen poorly. A torso covered with ammo belts or web gear would be a poorly chosen target for a karambit. Still, I would expect a properly sharpened karambit made of decent steel to cut its way loose of most web gear, belts, etc. without too much trouble.

straight knife for me everytime.
Daggers, bowies, karambits, etc. Depends on your fighting style which blade is best for you. The person is always more improtant than the knife.

I can see the offensive/defensive merits of a blade with positive curvature, but for utility reasons, I prefer this...

What's the name of the knife and the maker? I like the design:eek:

That's a Snag by Reese Weiland... I believe the price is approx $400, though I'm not sure.
