Karambit Question

From the "Concealed Carry Reciprocity" page of the Florida Division of Licensing. http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/news/concealed_carry.html

(1) While Florida's law allows licensees to carry stun guns, knives, and billy clubs in a concealed fashion, the laws in these states allow for concealed carry of handguns or pistols ONLY, NOT WEAPONS IN GENERAL. Florida license holders are prohibited from carrying other types of weapons while in these states.

Thanks for looking that up!

what always gets me cracking up about any posts about kermabits is how many people think you need extensive training before any use or its just a novelty. about the biggest difference is its better at slashing then stabbing. works wonders in pull cuts.

yes you do need training if you want to twirl with it, etc, but one can train with any type of blade and be above and beyond. just as one can use any type of knife without any training.

Well anyone can slash and cause damage. For me, I do the knife training mainly to be able cope with being cornered and attacked with a knife, or to protect a loved one. On my own I don't think I would get the footwork or know which part of my arm is better to get sliced on vs other areas. Otherwise, I'll just run to live another day instead of letting my ego get the best of me. YMMV

I see what you guys are saying. My concern is that, as with firearms, they can be more of a detriment to you than protection. I do have some basic training and I could probably figure out what to do if the situation arose. I guess my thing at this point is: I don't want to spend a ton of money on some piece of junk (or even $50 on a POS). I also don't want to get something that is not as useful as what I have now. That's kinda why I am steering clear of quality knives like emerson and going for more affordable items.

Definitely interesting discussions though.

I realize I'm coming into this discussion a little late in the game, but it's a topic that is very near and dear to my personal defense philosophy, so I felt compelled to chime in.

One must keep in mind the kerambit is not a wonder weapon. Unless you have some training its just an expensive hawkbill. Kerambit techniques require some defined timing and distancing skills. you need to be versed in hubud, gunting and pass cutting techniques in extreme corto range. Something thats is hard to develop on your own.

Very good points Colt.

Just wanted to reinforce your points by adding that NOTHING is a wonder weapon. Training, mindset and situational awareness will all prove far more useful than any tool one can carry on their person.

Every weapon has it's pros and it's cons. Over the years, my personal defense philosophy has distilled into: "Equip yourself with quality tools, subscribe to a proven methodology, drill it, drill it and then drill it some more."

I am reminded of the historical accounts of Miyamoto Musashi, who developed such proficiency with katana and wakizashi, that he took to breaking challengers' skulls with a wooden boken. His training had taken him to a place that it didn't matter what was in his hand during a critical situation.

I always try to remain open to new ideas, but keep in mind that "new" doesn't always equate with "better", or even "good". That and the fact that equipment will never replace proper repetition of effective technique.

Be prepared and stay safe,

lb you have a very valid statement. one of my friends whom walked on the dark side carried only a dog chain since it would'nt be discerned as a weapon. he was extremely proficient in his employments & only passed by his own hand at an advanced age.

So, with these issues being addressed, what are the best valued Karambits. 5.11 has been brought up and a few other. I am looking for overall value here folks. Blade quality is good but I don't want to spend a whole lot. Name doesn't matter too much to me. My hands are average size and I am fairly agile when it comes to knives.

More importantly, where is a good place to buy my knife at, make/model aside
