I realize I'm coming into this discussion a little late in the game, but it's a topic that is very near and dear to my personal defense philosophy, so I felt compelled to chime in.
One must keep in mind the kerambit is not a wonder weapon. Unless you have some training its just an expensive hawkbill. Kerambit techniques require some defined timing and distancing skills. you need to be versed in hubud, gunting and pass cutting techniques in extreme corto range. Something thats is hard to develop on your own.
Very good points Colt.
Just wanted to reinforce your points by adding that NOTHING is a wonder weapon. Training, mindset and situational awareness will all prove far more useful than any tool one can carry on their person.
Every weapon has it's pros and it's cons. Over the years, my personal defense philosophy has distilled into: "Equip yourself with quality tools, subscribe to a proven methodology, drill it, drill it and then drill it some more."
I am reminded of the historical accounts of Miyamoto Musashi, who developed such proficiency with katana and wakizashi, that he took to breaking challengers' skulls with a wooden boken. His training had taken him to a place that it didn't matter what was in his hand during a critical situation.
I always try to remain open to new ideas, but keep in mind that "new" doesn't always equate with "better", or even "good". That and the fact that equipment will never replace proper repetition of effective technique.
Be prepared and stay safe,
