Ok, Who has a tapered 1/8 standard Karda, and knows the weight?

I was just outside with my daughter and had a revelation, so now I have an idea developing in my mind. In her snow gear a belt is not really a viable option, and I'm for thinking a baldric rig with a small knife won't be the greatest idea either...so I am considering getting her a lightweight Fiddleback to wear around her neck for our outings. She likes using my EDK for the smaller blade and easier control, so since it is SFT 3/32 I am going to play with that today as a neck rig, but I am thinking a tapered standard Karda will be more comfortable around the neck for extended periods for her. We'll see how the EDK goes today though.

Hey Mist....

How about a Hiking Buddy for weight, etc.

Gordy

I don't know Gordy, the EDK I have is lighter than the HB I have, but a small footprint is also what I am looking for....for less annoyance for her and easier to get used to. I'm going to go play with that a while today and see what she thinks with it under her over layer, but I'm curious what the weight of the tapered standard Karda is. I'll post pics of the EDK with her and the weight of it after while when we get back.

I snagged a 1/8 hiking buddy sft a couple weeks ago and made a neck rig like the kind Scott gossman does for it. I've taken it on an overnight hike and a couple day outings. I don't even notice it. I'm sure the blade you are talking about is even lighter.

For comparison, my Hiking Buddy (Stabilized Maple burl, black g10 and orange g10 pinstripe, Tapered Tang, 1/8”) is 68 grams and my Runt (Nat can over black g10 and lime green g10 pinstripe, Tapered Tang, 1/8”) is 77 grams.

I can't give you a comparison opinion because I don't have a Karda yet. I have one coming from a good friend soon though.

Hey Mistwalker, could a knife be made with a tapered and skeletonized tang in 3/32 or would it be too weak? Having something hanging around a childs neck on the outside of their clothing always seemed a little scary to me. Though if the only time she would be using the knife is under your supervision it sounds like the way to go.

Mist,

I have a Karda, but it's not tapered. It feels a noticably lighter than a tapered 1/8" HB! I bet a tapered Karda would be NICE! I would love a tapered tang, thin, light Karda!

I have a 3/32" SFT Hiking Buddy that's so lightweight I forget it's there. I'm not sure a tapered would be necessary or possible. I'll have to try and weigh it somewhere.

Willi, how do you like your Karda? Do you have big or small hands? I haven't held one yet but it looks too big for a neck knife, but kinda small for a belt knife. Pocket carry is concealed here so no pocket carry.

mines a bit large to fit in my front pocket of my redhead cargos when i sit down

im guessing i have small hands ( i wear a size 10 wedding ring...if that means anything)
and my karda to me is on the the small size

as you can see in my pic the handle is a good bit smaller diameter than my runt or HB

Mist ... I have also been researching the Karda - to be used as a 'non-threatening' belt EDC ... even a Bushboot gets "looks" when in town ... Karda looks like it provides similar blade at much less imposing appearance.

majord,
who did you get your necker sheath from?

did you have to send them the knife?

It is a Blind Horse leather neck sheath. It extracts from the top. It's basically a small leather pouch style. I actually prefer handle down neck carry but that requires kydex. My Runt is maple and I don't put my natural handled knives in kydex. I consider this Runt set up my leisure camping neck carry. :D

i gotcha..i have a similar sheath
i was looking for a kydex because i like the handle down also....might have to take a look at the sheath i have...i know my BLJ fits in there but it's handle is a good bit thinner than my runt

I have a 1/8", tapered tang, 3 fingered Karda with hollow pins. I don't really have a good way to weigh it for you though. I also don't have a neck sheath for it so I haven't really tried carrying it like that. When I hold both, the Karda feels about the same, if not a tad lighter than an Izula with scales.

I have an SFT 1/8 HB, and lighter is definitely what I am looking for, as well as less bulk for this particular application.

Interesting that the Runt is heavier...

It won't be carried outside her coat, and I'll have it on a break-a-way chain for safety. and it's just for these cold months. In the warm months she'll have her knife on her belt.

I love the idea of it myself. Maybe I'll get it for me, and loan it to her in the winter :)

Thanks man, but I have a SFT 3/32 EDK and I'm looking for smaller and lighter if possible...but mostly smaller :)

Man that Karda of yours is sexy!

Ha, the way people view pointy these days, I'll be surprised if the Karda doesn't still get you at least a few looks... I've considered an EDC, but damn it, I like pointy! :)

Thank you! Those words and those pics, are worth much more than a thousand words to me!

Icy got close (thanks for the pics!), anyone have pics of the littlest Karda in hand? It's one of those knives that I just can't wrap my head around dimensionally. :o

I've always longed for another 3 finger Karda. I sold a scandi version hoping to pick up a convex Karda. I wish I had kept the scandi. That is the perfect EDC!
