Katadyn Water Filters

Katadyn are the best on the planet. Filter out everything but viruses and I don't believe there is anything that will do that yet. However, Katadyn makes these really cool bleach tablets that will kill the viruses and then most of it will filter out so you really can't tast it. I've had a Pocket filter for over 10 years now and it hasn't failed me yet.

Ditto. 7 years now. Worth the alledged extra weight when ya don't end up losing more body fluids than you take in...

I used a Katadyn filter for years after getting giardia from a spring in the mountains.
I lost that in a divorce and then bought a MSR pump filter that has just as fine a filter and works faster. I've been using it since 1992 and have had no problems. It is also cheaper. There are other filters out there as well. Check out higher end outfitting stores for what is available.

In that 10 years, how many times did you change the ceramic filter element?

I have a pur voyger which is the pur hiker but there is iodine in the filter element and carbon in the stop top. It kills viruses and makes the water taste good to boot. Unfortunatly I think katydyn owns pur now and their version of the filter element does not have the option of iodine and they don't make the carbon stop top. My filter has seen some use, not heavy use but I liked in none the less. I may consider a MSR filter if and when I ever need to replace it. I've seen clorine drops for viruses but I forget who makes it.

Having said this I must confess I have about 4 different models and brands. And yes they all suck.I have used:
1st. need.
MSR mini-works
Katadyn pocket model
basic designs cermic.
Also a sweet water in-line I am waiting to try.
I have decided to use my filters only when I need water to drink "right now". for all other needs I will use chem. treatments.
Iodine or clorine. I find that the taste is really not that bad, I prefer iodine to clorine tho. much better flavor or lack of it!
When I have a cook fire going it is not a problem to boil whatever we need. It is a PITA to filter 4+gal per day for two people.
One thing common to any filter is the lack of a good pre-filter.
None of the stock pre-filters really work well.
<><

Well, I just went camping and I took the Katadyn Pocket Filter with me.

The filter worked very well. It is very laborious to filter water for a large group of people. We had 6 people, so everyone took turns filling up a 5 gallon bottle. The Katadyn's Pocket model's construction is very rugged and is reliable in the wilderness.

On my next trip, I am going to give the combi model a try. I want to taste the difference with the charcoal prefilter in combination with the .2 micron ceramic filter.

Filters may suck, but compared with not having drinking water, they are a necessity.

Bug-out-bags suck too, but you have to have one.

My Katadyn Pocket Filter is going into my BOB.

just bought the Katydn Pocket filter... says on the box it filters viruses... so did the box for MSR's two models... All on the wall of my local REI...

Viruses? Really?

The box on mine just points out that bacteria, spores, worm eggs, protozoan cysts, suspended solids and turbidities are filtered out.

I had thought that viruses could only be killed with chemicals or heat.

not sure, but on the back of the box it describes the three stages of purification and one of the stages states that it removes viruses... I thought it wierd, too, because only the MSR versions said they removed viruses... but they cost 3 or 4 times as much as mine on sale at REI... As to how, if there is a silver based stage, that stuff apparently kills viruses... but I'm not overly sure on that...

I've got the box right in front of me. The embedded silver in the ceramic filter protects against bacteria growth inside the filter, not viruses.

Its a dangerous thing to be wrong about what these filters do and don't do.:)

I'll have to check the box when I get home... I'm sure I read something, I just don't remember what at the moment... :(

I did read about the virus removal... in the box explaining the three levels of watertreatment - Purification, Filtration, etc... It had nothing to do with the abilities of the Katadyn...:footinmou
Sometimes I accuse others of going off half-cocked... and I guess it's worse when ya find it iin yerself!:grumpy: Oh well, all's I can plead is a bad memory and my only access to this site is at work... with little time and none of my resources... unless I remember to pack them in each nite before bed... otherwise I forget...
However, It can be used in conjunction with watertreatment tablets, so I guess for the size, the price and the quality, this'll fit neatly in my survival/hiking kit just fine!:)
Thanks for puttin' up with an old man's failing eyes and mind...;)

No apologies needed Josh.

I just didn't want you out there filtering some biohazard waste water thinking that the katadyn ceramic filter would save you.

:D

Have you guys thought about the latest FBI warning on the threat of mass poisoning by nicotene? This one I find a little scary!

I haven't had to change the element yet. They say it will filter 10,000 to 13,000 gallons and the only time you need to change it is if the element gets too thin from cleaning (A thickness guage also comes with the filter). They say to clean it with this little sandpaper scrubby thing that come with the filter but only if the element gets clogged with silt and slugge. Must of the water I've filtered has been out of rivers and streams in the Rocks and soon to be the Cascades and the Sierra Navad so it has never really gotten clogged with shtuff so I don't really use the scrubby thing. I clean it in tap water when I get home from my trips then I set it out to dry so it is ready for the next time out. I've only had to use the scrubby thing once or twice so the element still looks almost new. Hope this helps.

You might want to check that out. A little while ago I did some checking because I couldn't remember if it dose or not. I checked the Katadyn web site. http://www.katadyn.net/ (There is also another site in Switzerland From what I saw they won't guaranty it will filter viruses that it will only filt down to .2 microns and many viruses are smalled than that. Heres what it said on the Katadyn webpage:

Technical Features
Pocket Filter Purpose and Action

Microfiltration of water which may be contaminated by infective
organisms.
Katadyn filters were originally designed to meet Swiss standards for
removal of all bacteria from natural untreated water sources such as
rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, springs, reservoirs and wells.
They are also used on dechlorinated water to remove bacteria which
may pass through or incubate and multiply on the wet charcoal filters
used to remove chlorine or chemicals.
Giardia and other cysts, as well as, coliform and the smallest known
bacteria were shown to be completely removed in many tests.
Tests also demonstrated zero bacteria in the filtered water after idle
intervals, demonstrating that no bacteria incubate within the filter.
Contamination of the ceramic filter element by harmful bacteria is
prevented by bacteriostatic silver which is dispersed and fixed
throughout the ceramic material by Katadyn's proprietary manufacturing
process. This protection lasts up to the end of the life cycle of the
element.
The water being filtered flows from the outside surface of the ceramic
through to a protected interior chamber and then to the output spout
which therefore is repeatedly flushed by decontaminated water free of
infective organisms.
The Katadyn Pocket does not remove 99.9% of viruses and does not
remove dissolved minerals or chemicals. Therefore, sea water or
brackish water is not desalinated. Nor is water softened by removal of
the hardness, minerals, calcium, and magnesium, normally considered
beneficial in water for drinking and food preparation.
Charcoal required for effective removal of chemical pollutants and bad
odors is an additional water treatment process than microfiltration for
removal of infective microorganisms and is not included in the Katadyn
Pocket.
Parasites, algae, pollen, fungi, asbestos fibers, nuclear explosion debris,
invisible dust particles, as well as, larger suspended particles and
sediment are removed by Katadyn filtration. Therefore, water is
clarified and often tastes better.
The outside surface of the ceramic filter element may temporarily plug
up by the particulate matter in water. The exterior of the ceramic is then
wiped or brushed to restore the normal flow rate.

The Katadyn Pocket does not remove 99.9% of viruses ...

Now what is this supposed to mean ? Does it remove only 99.8 % or none at all or what...?
