katana knowledge?

wow thats a great video, it really makes modern knife making look lazy. I liked the part where they demonstrated a European sword.

But it seems my greatest challenge in knife making is not silver smithing or grinds ,right now it is finding steel! I'll have to drive 3 hours to get 5160 and it will probably will be too thick!

do knives from files create a good product or is it just a good learning tool?

Most file steels will make a good knife. The issue is knowing what kind of steel was used for the file. Is it W2 or 1095 or something else. If you can find out what the steel type is, and it's W2 or 1095, it'll make a great product. Sometimes, however, files are case carburized. Case carburized files do not make a good knife.

Oh, if i would it would be an old Nicholson file because I'm having trouble buying high carbon steel in my area.
