Kayak advice?

Some very good advice here. I have a 16 ft Tesla touring kayak with foot steering and I Love it. I am also building a 20 foot tandem skin on frame (SOF) boat for me and the SO. Then probably a couple 13 to 16 foot SOF boats.
I have used a sit on top a lot and they are very handy for fishing if the water is warm, if its not then you could get terminal shrinkage. Sit on to is very easy to get in and out of, easy to paddle and turn but thay are wet, heavy and sluggish and all your gear has to be carried on top. My touring boat has 2 dry sections for gear, but its harder to get in and out of, easy to paddle and steer and will haul all I needfor a week camping no problem. SOF boats can be built for under $300 and you can build in dry sections.
Its turning my crank to build a couple of these things. They are very light, a 20 foot tandem is around 40 lbs. They are flexable, strong and fast. Like other kayaks they areharder to get in and out of.
You can rig most any kayak for fishing.
SOF boats...$200 to $1000 for a super freak boat
Fiberglass, Carbon Fiber touring boats $1000 to billions, some very pricy ones out there
Sit on top...$400 and up
Padles $50 and up. I have a very light carbon fiber and glass paddle I got used for $300.
If you want I have links to a BUNCH of kayak sites

I used to rent them out decades ago. Lots of good advice already. Many shops will let you rent them, or sponsor group paddles/trips. This is a good way to find out if you really want one, and perhaps what kind. Like everything else in life, there are pros and cons to each option. Once you know what you want, you can also get deals on used models from shops with low usage, and even places like craigslist.

Awesome for fishing the flats, bays, shoreline, etc. Great for birding and exploring marine life, etc. It is a great sport especially if you have daily access to water close to home.
