I have a friend/local maker that has some S30V. How do you think that would work as an aquatic use knife. I posted previously on the subject. I could not find my perfect dive knife at the Blade show. All my fixed blade EDC are O1 or 1095. Opinions please .

Salt water or fresh? If fresh water, S30V would be okay, but I would recommend a very high-polish. I have a Martin Knives BT in S30V, but it has the "subdued" finish and will pick up rust in the surface...no harm, but it will stain from the surface oxidization.

Mostly fresh water. Just finished my saltwater adventures last week at Cape San Blas at the St Joseph Peninsula State Park with my Spyderco pacific Salt.
My Randall Model 16 diver(ss) will spot after salt water excursions but it cleans up easily. it is just too big for the kayak.
Hey ROCK 6 saw your other post in a horizontal sheath thread. Whats your kayak knife?

I haven't locked anything down yet as my Kayaking has been limited to my little lake. I usually take my Bark River "Wet Enviro" knife when playing in swampy areas. Since I'm mostly kayaking in fresh water, it's really not much of a concern. We're heading to the Key's in July and plan to do a little kayak tour, so I'm considering a simple Spyderco Salt folder.

S30V should be fine as long as you make it a polished finish, no matte finish.

Keep it oiled up after water use. IMO in fresh water it won't be any worry if you dunk it now and then. But if its in the salt water, then definitely give it a good freshwater washdown and follow it with some oil.

I'd say go with good ol 440C. It is extremely corrosion resistant and when HTed properly is an excellent stainless steel.

I do some kayaking myself and after getting wet a number of times and seeing rust on my blade I went titanium. I bought an MPK 10 from Mission Knives. It will not rust, ever guaranteed. I have no worries now, I don't even give rust a thought anymore with this knife. I forgot it once for two days in my boat and no sign of rust. Check them out and check out the test the Navy did on this product.

Well when I was out fishing out of my kayak Sat. I carried my Vic. farmer on a paracord leash along with my windmill lighter and a coldsteel bird and trout knife around my neck

When I was kayaking alot I got irritated by a knife rusting when it was neglected. If things got busy I wound up leaving it wet in the sheath... So something stainless would be good maybe. Or just rock the 1095 and wipe it down when you can. A little rust doesn't hurt anything.

Actually if you look in my avatar you will see a blade. It was a Scrap Yard SOD.

I've been carrying a Mora 2000 on my canoe trips for years. Light, good size, stainless, grippy and most of all cheap to replace if it ever falls overboard.

,,,

What exactly is the pacific not doing for you, that you are looking for another knife?

Thanks for the replies-My intended question was if S30V would be a decent choice of steel. I have a local maker, less than 10 miles away(World Class Knives) who has some S30V on hand and can make one in my design.( I need another knife like a hole in the head but remember this is the Blade Forum!!!!)

I have carried a custom-made S30V 4-1/4" fixed blade in a drybag for almost 11 years now, with no problems. I also carry a Spyderco serrated Rescue folder in a PFD pocket, for more than 11 years, also with no problems. The blade is stainless steel, but I do not recall the exact kind.

I think S30V would be fine for fresh water.

I have these two.

And I also just got these two.

Unfortunately, three of the four are now discontinued, but you can find that Spyderco serrated version very easily still.
The CRKT design, I like a lot, but the sheath could be better IMO. Another FRN travesty that looks better than it works.

Did you go down with the Georgia Kayak Fishing group? I haven't fished with them in a long time, but I have gone down to Lanier and fished with a group of the guys, and I fished a tournament with them over in South Carolina. I wonder if most of the same guys still haunt that forum. I need to pop in some time and say hello.
