I have a KBAC 27D on my grinder and the electronic brake has stopped working. If I unplug the machine from the wall the brake kicks in, otherwise when I turn the switch off it coasts to a stop. It did this once before and then started working properly again. The VFD is less than a year old and may be covered under a warranty but I was just curious if anyone else has had a similar problem and if so how did you resolve it. Thanks, Steve B

Mine seems to depend on the rotating mass it is trying to brake. It will stop small wheels and the flat platen but not the 10" or 14" wheels. The 14" wheel takes forever to wind down so I usually end up hand braking it. Maybe something I could tune inside the unit but, it doesn't really bother me. I did have the ac line switch go out on mine; now it stays on all the time. Mine is just over a year old.

There is usually a program setting in the VFD that determines the amount of braking allowed. A lot of braking requires the addition of a fairly large wattage resistor to absorb the excess energy.

So once again I am answering my own question. I called KB Electronics tech support. They explained that the J7 jumper controls the braking. It was set on RG (regenerative). At their suggestion I changed the jumper to INJ (injection braking). That caused the motor to stop RIGHT NOW! Too quick. So I adjusted the decel clockwise to get the motor to halt in a couple of seconds. Back to normal but there is still something wrong in the guts of the machine. The tech guy said that they would diagnose for free but would not provide warranty service unless I can verify the purchase and I can't find the name of the company that I bought it from. He did tell me that based on the serial number I provided that it was produced in 2002 and it is probably remanufactured. I am disappointed about that because i paid as new price for it.

Where did you buy it from?

Somewhat rhetorical.

I am having a serious senior moment and can neither find the receipt or remember who the seller was. I even looked through my old credit card receipts and paypal to try to find the seller. As to my comment about answering my own question, it was not a slam on anyone, just saying that when there is a problem, call the guy who made it. Rhetorical? I dunno. I had to google that one. Just trying to explain to another poster what "I" did to solve the problem.

@glassguy
I just got my 27s back from kb and they had to replace the board. It used to stop immediately, now it coasts to a stop. I wondered if that jumper might change that, but I hadn't called tech support yet.

Another thing mine does is if I turn it down suddenly from, say, 80% to 30%, it kills power to the motor unless I shut it off and turn it back on. Going down slowly works as it should. I wonder if that jumper would help that issue as well.

Changing the jumper AND adjusting the DECEL got mine working as well as it has previously. Otherwise the the motor stopped RIGHT NOW. Call tech support, I spoke with Charles and he seemed to know his stuff.

That's the difference between buying a good product with good support and an ebay unit shipped straight from over there with either no manual, or some hopeless machine translation to program an infinite number of modes and menus.
