So, I just recently got a Kbar D2 Extreme off eBay for a pretty good deal. But then I noticed some imperfections. And being a perfectionist I suppose I tried to fix it. Only then to nick the coating of the knife I presume. So, what I ended up doing was getting a Birchwood Casey Super Flat Black off Amazon and applied it, you can see it in those images I provided.

Link to the Birchwood by the way.

Is that Birchwood any good or am I basically overreacting to a small nick on the knife? Though, it is brand spanking new... I also got the Birch in case my guns ever needed the touching up.

very minor abrasion. you'll get much worse with normal use
Yeah I'd think so. I have a Kabar from WW2 days and that thing looks like it has been through a lot.

Well I'll take your word for abrasion. I mean, remember I used that Birchwood touch up, so that is what you are now seeing. I did cut the coating. Wonder if I'd could have used better for a closer finish. I heard a bunch about DuraCoat for instance.

Mine has been used heavily and finish seemed less durable than duracoat if your not planning on much hard use id duracoat it. My kabar is in a survival systems custom kydex sheath that's a tight fit and finish has been affected by that too so sheath selection matters.

Duracoat is an epoxy coating that will chip and wear with use. I have a couple of older knives and firearms with epoxy finishes that I thought would be like armor plating and they all have wear on them. Then the ceramic coatings like Cerakote became all the rage and promised to be the answer. And everything I have with that all show wear. Then I went PVD and DLC and I have to say that's the best yet but even that isn't bullet proof. Bottom line is if you use it then it's going to show honest wear and I personally try to rejoice in that. But I also focus on the difference in use and abuse. I don't mind some honest use but I don't abuse knives or any tool.
