Here are a large and small Chinook, designed by James Keating. Look at these for shape, not materials and mechanism. Sal says that if they make them, it probably won't be a liner lock.

Well, I was warned. As a concave clip-point hater, these aren't my thing at all. I do appreciate the pictures, though

Hmm not sure about those two. I am sure the shape is the way it is for a very good reason. I am guessing it is not ment for general everyday use based on the shape and the designer. What lock do you have in mind for that Sal?

Well, the pictures reminded me why I didn't bother handling the prototypes at Blade. Looks to be a reverse grip slasher/ripper. Not my thing either. Yeah, I remember Sal saying a different lock than the linerlock if it comes out.

I like it! BUT for the hole opening teqhnique with tip down knife I would think that the hole should be located more towards the pivot end of the blade.

The design of this knife exudes self defense applications: the hooked pinky catch, excessive belly for aggressive slashing, large index cut out for integral guard, centered point for accurate thrusting, clip point for bowie practitioners (back cut if sharpenned).

However, I must admit this is one ugly knife! In all due respect, is there no way the design team can streamline this model?

I don't think it's that bad. It may not be for me though. Somehow this knife looks like it should be named "hoss". dunno why.

I'm all for it!. I personally like the design. While I wouldn't say it is at the top of my list, I would buy it. I would prefer a plain edge on this one.

You're right, it really isn't that ugly. But compared to some recently and yet to be released models, it pales in comparison in terms of visual appeal.

Regardless, its design is very sound and I wouldn't mind carrying such a folder for defensive purposes.

If Spyderco decides to change the name to "Hoss" I only ask for a large size of the knife for payment.

Chinook, is a fish is it not?

Isn't the chinook the salmon that gets the really nasty hump on its back during spawning, and also gets the kinda beak lookin growth on the front end? If it's the chinook beacuse of the hump keep the name otherwise HOSS would sum it up pretty well. I can see it fitting in pretty well with little Jo' and Bens kit and kaboodle...

If not, so be it.

But that curve is gonna be useful as all get out.

Wow, Spyderco is cool, Lum and Keating, things you would see from no other company.

I like the broad blade but not the con-cave. (rap music please

)

Deon is on the money concerning the hole location for rapid deployment. But then again, one can simply "snap" it out.

For the type and size, G 10 scales would be lighter and would provide a better grip than SS or Ti.

But these are only prototypes and the final product may vary.

Wouldn' t buy it the way it is now.

Hi All,
I find it interesting: that first reaction to the design. I suppose the reputation of the designer has much to do with it though....
My first reaction was, " what a great skinner". The two knives that I've been using in the last year for the heavy skinning work has been a Cold Steel push dagger(urban skinner) and a Spyderco Remote Release. I'd just have to get a couple of these!!
Dan
Soooo many knives, so little money.

It's okay, I guess. I just keep thinking how high I'm going to have to raise my elbow to get enough point presentation to slit open a bag of M&M's. I'd never carry it as my one and only. It would complement something with a narrower drop- or spear-point blade.

Make mine plain-edged, with G-10.

Knife looks good, but should be called "The Rhino"

I read somewhere that this knife has a 4" blade(which I hope is still the case), when I remembered this, I looked at the pictures above again, and saw that the blade would be massive(in width), I personnally would like to see this preserved on the production version.

I'm firmly in the "I like 'em!" camp. My first thought was they are kinda 'vaquero'-esque, and should be good cutters. But they are really more like the CS 'El Lobo' with a little flatter belly.
Anyway, 'Rhino' is an excellent name, very fitting, second only to 'Wolf' and 'Wolf Cub' of course!
