On the recommendation of another member, I picked these up a couple weeks ago. The are from Extra coarse to extra extra fine. I have worked over quite a few knives with them and they are just great. From DMT, the Diafolds.

Nothing finer, Jim. Been using them for quite awhile, and wouldn't trade them for anything else. DMT Diafold's ROCK!

One of those was actually about the first sharpener I ever bought. It frustrated me at first, but now that I can functionally sharpen on a stone, they're fairly handy. I prefer my Spyderco pocket stone now, seems to do a better job of sharpening for me. They're still very nice pieces of kit, though. I do like using mine on axes.

The fold-out handle is especially handy, though.

I am considering picking up one or two of those for my camping/survival gear. They seem like a good concept, but I have not used one before.
How long of a blade can be used with those?

Freehand or using the Magna Guide? Freehand, I use them on my machetes. With the Magna Guide, I would think 6 or 7 inches at least. I use the Magna Guide with a 6 inch blade all the time.

They're very handy.I keep a double sided one on me all the time.

I use these from DMT, i like em alot...i want to get the full set of 8" diamond blocks as well in all grades. 2.5" surface and i have sharpened a khukuri and machete with them before in the field.

I guess there is no limit to how long a knife they would work on, however it would take a while on real long blades.

I have one of the small Paddle type in a fine grit I love it for my SAK's:thumbup:

Diafolds are great  I have a bunch of them , as well as the keychain series. Today I bought the 600/1200 8" benchstone for my bigger blades. It works awesome. For nicks ( rarely) , I use my 1" belt sander. But , the Diafolds always come with me on trips.

I made a sort of pocket sharpener for convex edges. I got some 3/8 thick x3 inches wide. I cut off 6 inches of it and used spray adhesive to put thin craft rubber on one side and felt on the other then put two different grits of wet/dry and paper on it. Wally world has the felt and foam in the craft department as well as the spray adhesive. They have the sand paper in automotive. I used 600 on one side and 1500 on the other side. You can also put it together with thumb tacks or a staple gun.

+1

All of my favorite sharpening stuff is from DMT.

The credit card sharpener, the diafold, and my 8inch diamond stone.

I have a six inch fine bench stone, I need to get at least a medium for those bigger jobs.

What are the grits on these? I need to buy a portable sharpener and "fine" or "coarse" is a bit vague.

Glad ya like them jim ;)

the DMT grits from XXC-EEF are: 120, 220, 320, 600, 1200, 8000, note these are in mesh not grit.

I find the pointed ones for serrated knives are really nice too. Just fold it up and put it in my camping gear for a quick sharpening of the blade. They are nice and handy little tools.

Anyone have a field setup for covex sharpening?

A paint stir stick is free and has enough give for convexing in my experience. Its what I use to sharpen machetes. Just wrap it in sandpaper and secure with rubber bands. THen use it just like you would a file.

That is what Scott gossman uses as well. Great piece of kit!

I've been using them for 13 years. Great procuct. I especially like the Duos - fine/coarse. I have used them on knives, machetes, hatchets/axes, and hawks.
