Keep them sharp anywhere

Anyone have a field setup for covex sharpening?

I use a regular stone and just put a small microbevel on them in the field. They perform about the same. It doesn't actually take a whole lot of work to learn how to work the whole bevel on a convex edge with a stone, too, although in the field I've never found much of a reason to do this.

Last summer (I believe) I got the coarse to extra fine set of two- I really love them. Before that I've sharpened thousands of times (most knives more than once) on the keychain coarse/med and fine. The grit smoothes out over time but is still effective- my fine stone is about 15 years old and still going strong, although I must admit for quick touchups at home I've started to be lazy and use the Sharpmaker- but I still prefer a toothy diamond edge.

I often have a fine/extra fine either in my pack (if carrying a leather sheath), or velcro'd directly to a kydex sheath (soft velcro on Diafold handle, rough velcro on sheath).

They are the best for "anywhere" sharpening. I also use the EZE Lap brass handle diamond rod in my field sharpening kit. If anyone wants to see my field sharpening method, check it out over on my forum. I have a video on You Tube.

Im wanting to try something like this, I use a Norton stone, ceramic rod, and a leather strop, my axes will shave.

Before I picked up the Spyderco diamond rods, I had two double sided models, black/blue and red/green. I don't even remember the grits anymore, but they worked well for my needs at them time.

I have a DMT Aligner - I take the whole kit with me when I go camping, and my leather strop too. I really like keeping my knives 'shaving sharp'. I also use the course (blue) hone in the holder freehand (without blade clamp) on my KA-BAR Kukri - gets it sharp and I don't feel the need to polish the edge on that one.

 What's mesh?

There are three standard measures of coarseness/fineness of grit:

Grit (American Standard)
Mesh
Micron

Grit 100000 Mesh 0-0.5 Micron 1/4
Grit 60000 Mesh 0-1 Micron 1/2
Grit 14000 Mesh 0-2 Micron 1
Grit 8000 Mesh 2-4 Micron 3
Grit 2800 Mesh 5-10 Micron 7
Grit 1200 Mesh 10-20 Micron 15
Grit 600 Mesh 20-40 Micron 30
Grit 325 Mesh 40-50 Micron 55

All the DMT products I have though have what micron they are on them...not mesh, so I dunno what his talking about saying that DMT's products are rated in Mesh. For instance my extra fine hone is 9 micron, says it plain as day on the handle.
