Keep your gear close

I've gone to the point of having a contingency plan in case I even lose my pants! :o

I where a paracord bracelet made with about 18' of paracord. I have Ranger Banded to this a Victorinox Classic SAK and a Boy Scout Hot Spark ferro rod. I figure with the Ranger band, spark, knife and cord, I at least have something to work with.

As far as a water container, that would involve having something on a belt or in a pocket, which is not part of my last ditch contingency plan, but perhaps you could tote a quart Ziplock freezer bag or a Platypus 1L canteen "bag." I have one and have kept it in belt kits before. The freezer bags have worked for me as well.

Just some ideas!

Well, I suppose if we're going to plan on losing our pants, we can make a (hopefully small) kit to go in ouir, ahem, "man bag".

Of course, the girls have twice the storage space. . .

It seems like when you are out and about, the most important stuff you will already have in your pockets for easy access. If you have a knife, light, and firestarter in your pocket, you can use them easily around camp when you need them, and if for some reason you left your pack somewhere in the dark, you can go find it.

Cargo pants/BDUs carry at least knife (SAK, often a second folder), lighter, bandanna, and a small zipper bag with some backup firestarting supplies, minimal FAK, bleach tabs, water bag, flashlight, compass, usually a notepad and pen also. This keeps me gear out of the way of pack straps.

Rock beat me to it. The Ribz stuff is what came to mind when I read your initial thread. But... I haven't gone that route. Breathability and mobility are both big for me since I like to hike a good distance. Still, the packs are intriguing and an interesting option.

I just tried out ribz last week on a 4 day backpacking trip... While they were awesome be sure to not overload them as they can wear a bit on your shoulders.
