Keeping a 110 Clean, Shiny and Sharp

In a pinch cardboard will sharpen a knife.Wet it and put ashes on it and this does it better. No fire,no problem.Go to a stream or water hole find some fine silt or clay.Take a handful and put that on the flat part of a log and start stropping. You'll have a sharp knife while waiting for Turkey at the water hole.In the desert, pull your leather belt off lay it on a hard surface and start stropping. It will be sharp before the next coyote comes to your call.No excuse to ever be w/o a sharp knife.DM

I can't beleive DM left out the disclaimer about making sure the coffee cup is empty first! :) Another cheap tip is to use the cardboard backside of a yellow legal pad for a strop once you get it sharp. This really puts a nice hair popping edge on the blade. I like leather better, But this works too.

Posting this for David,

well i will chime in here wit my old work fav's
a small easylap diamond stick works like a champ for keeping a working edge
a porcelain high voltage fuse was when i needed it realy sharp
and i got a tungston rod from the welders and took the easy lap
and made passes down the leanth and then honed the edge with that
to do the arm hair shaving thing...
at home now
i learned to use wet auto finish fine sand paper on plate glass
as a cheep way to sharpen plain blades
norton has some stones with chyristals in them that
are sposed to be the bomb but i dont have them yet..
plane blades

Dave,Those are good ideas.I also carry the EZ Lap diamond stick w/ me in the field.Looks like a writing pen which telescopes the rod out w/a tighting collet. So,light and handy and will even do serrations quite well.DM

The big, brown truck brought my Lansky crocksticks today. Touched up my 110, and even managed to get some Chinese junk knives sharp enough to pop hairs. I'm impressed!

I sharpened my buds 110 on the top edge of my window in my ford ranger once,it must have been sharper than he thought it'd get,14 stitches sharper.
