Keeping the head on

I have a trail hawk I am almost done modding. (I'll post pics in the modding thread when I'm done.) The thing is, when it was new and I was throwing it, I hit my target butt first. This happened several times and when I examined my hawk I found out the head had moved several inches down the shaft. I figured that the screw-thing had just not been tightened enough so I knocked the head back up, tightened the screw and continued to throw. The problem persisted so I took the head off completely. I found that the screw had dug a downward trench. I decide that this would be a good time to mod. I filled the trench up with epoxy but I need a really reliable way to keep the head from moving the next time I throw. If I don't get any better answers I suppose I'll just drill a hole directly under the head and push a concrete nail through sand the point and head. On a more positive note I think that my mods look pretty good for my first time. My next project will be a matching long-knife made from a kitchen one.

3wolves, one of the reasons a hawk head is made to slide up the haft from the bottom is so when throwing, rather than the haft breaking on a misplaced throw, the head just slides off and you can reattach it. on my trail hawk, i just filed the set screw off smooth inside the eye. a really exceptional fit can be had without a screw or wedges if you take a little time to smooth the haft and shape it to fit snug. a few raps with a mallet will help. if done right you shouldnt have any problems with the head coming off. hope this helped

The set screw on the cold steel hawks are really short & some of the hawk handles are softer than others.
The easy fix is to buy a longer screw at a hardware store.
That’s a 25 cent fix that will guarantee the head won’t come lose.
You could also buy another handle from Cold steel, you might get a denser one.
