Kel-Tec Rifles?

ktog.org is a good bunch of people. They are pretty quick answering questions and providing solutions to people. I just wish they had better forum software.

The guys there claim that without their community, their would be no support for KT's at all. People would just have to constantly mail their gear back.

Also, there are a lot complaints due to inconsistencies in the plastic used in some sub2000s (I don't know about the pistols) as well as non-glock magwell versions of the sub.

The SU16 seem rock solid at this point. Nothing flying off during shooting (except the rear sight on one persons SU16).

I think they found a niche market with their folding pistol caliber carbines and rifles, especially if their pistols are as crappy as Hung-solo says.

if you have to have a website for the everyday person to tell you how to fix your BRAND NEW gun so you dont have to send it back once, twice or sometimes, three times then that should be a big warning sign.. the folks there are great, the customer service is pretty good too BUT i want the product right the first time not the third.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, I would prefer to buy things that are perfect out of the box. But, like you said, its not everybody's experience. There are plenty of people's KT guns that were good to go out of the box.

My little P3AT has been 100%. However, around here you can get an LCP for just a little more money, and get a lot better constructed firearm. Compare the two side by side sometime. Their larger pistols feel just as cheaply made, but the rifles seem to be of better build quality. They have some interesting designs that seem to be well engineered, just the execution is spotty.

I have been reading quite a bit about Kel-tec rifles.

Most of the negative reviews are before 2008. Since then, it seems that their products have a pretty good reputation.

I was looking at he RFB, Sub2000 and the SU16 rifles.

Their price point (except for the RFB) and portablity make them very attractive.

Anybody have any experience with these?

I actually like the Kel-Tec products, though I've never handled the RFB you mention. Both the Sub 2000 and the SU16 series are great, handy little weapons and in a pinch could be strapped inside your pack (where it is legal to do so) for some R&R out in the wild.

I have had the SU-16CA for several years now and enjoy it. I might have been the one to post that the rear sight fell off, mine did, but that was after having it for several years, with all of those banging around in my trunk. Customer service was fine in getting me a replacement.

Mine is pleanty accurate, never had a failure to feed as long as I wasn't riding the bolt, and eats crap ammo without a complaint.

That being said, this is not a battle rifle and should not be expected to be. I have others that fill that role. It is a plinker or a backpacking gun, or a trunk gun. And mine fills that role well and it does it well enought that I would buy it again.

Only thing I have done to it is add a sling. Which was a bitch.

I have a 9mm. I pull the trigger...it goes bang. However, It's not the weapon I'd choose to go into battle with. I bought it when I was having my "gotta walk 250 miles when tHe eNd tImEs come" fantasy...and I figured that a 4 pound rifle and 9mm ammo would be very easy to carry. Plus it looked reasonably cool...but that was a ninja fantasy and I really have no use for my KelTec Sub2000 other then to plink with it from time to time.

LOL! This is the exact experience I have with the sub2000. I'm still happy with the purchase though. Considering I have a bunch of a 9mm and spare glock magazines, its a nice toy to have around.

I've shot a friend's Su-16 once - and so has he! To be honest, we had a hard time getting it sighted in. None of us could get a group on paper with it, and all of us are good shots. And, I'm talking at only 100 and 50 yards! To be honest my friend really doesn't like his rifle - I think he is being too quick to write it off though. The sights were very basic and not easy to adjust in any sort of precise manner. I don't remember experiencing any jams with it.

Well, my friend has now tried to sight in his SU-16 on four different occasions now. He also mounted a scope on it. I have not shot the thing again since he is spending all his range time trying to get that thing zeroed. He can now get sub 4" groups at 50 yards - and that's bench rested. IMHO, that's pretty terrible. But, at least it is grouping and hitting the target. He and I agree, this has been the hardest rifle to zero we've ever shot. His cheap laser bore sighter was a waste of money - we could not see the red dot during the day even at 25 yards!

He is keeping his rifle, though.

i dont think they are made for 150 yrds.. i think its more up close and personnal.. besides its a platic toy gun what did you expect??

I've had a S2K in both 9mm and .40 - both are good for what they are; pistol caliber carbines. For users who want ammo and magazine comminality they are a great choice. Neither are "rifles" and shouldn't be expected to do what rifles do. As adjuncts to your Glock, Sig or Beretta they will allow more consistant hits further than your pistol. But it seems to me if something is beyond pistol range (either effectiveness or skill) you need a rifle or cover:)

I have fired a SU16 fairly extensively. It combines a bunch of nice features but isn't really more compact than an AR, AK or Mini-14 with a folding stock. Its accurate and reliable, as long as you feed it the ammo it likes. One can pick up an AR or Ak for about the same price, so there's not much advantge there.

For the record I own and carry a P32 daily. It has about 2000 rounds through it without a problem. I have owned, fired and carried a P11, P40 and PF9 and have about 1000 rounds through each (except the P40 - OUCH). I haven't gotten a bad one yet. I'm sure they're out there...YMMV;)

I meant to say, we shot it at 100 yards, then switched to 50 yards when we weren't hitting paper. We never shot it at 150 yards.

I've had my S2K and P32 for quite some time; my wife has had her P3AT .380 for a few years...neither of us have had any issues.

The SUB2K is really a fun gun, but again, it's a niche design and it fit a very specific role for me at one point. I found a version the fed Sig mags as that's what I was CC'ing at the time. Since then, I found that mine will feed all the CZ-75/85 mags as well...a nice surprise.

The best feature is the folding design allowing you to carry it in a very compact package. It's still shoots a pistol round, but accuracy out to 100 meters is very consistent.

I've got some good pictures of it compared to a folding stock AK; for a compact pistol-caliber carbine, it does qutie well.

I have a sub2000 setup to take Glock Magazines. It's a hoot to shoot. I picked up 6 32 round mags for her. Very good plicker the one that I have. We shoot clay birds at 50 yards with it until they disappear. It founds up nicely and fits in a bag that I bought from a suplus store. I always take it out and have a blast with it.

I have the sub2000 in 40. I have to send mine back because the hinged area/polymer block that wraps the chamber is broke. they fix for free and ship it back for free. you would think i would be pissed that it broke to begin with but i am the second owner and dont know what abuse it took. I will say this, its putting them in an inch at 25 yds off bench. put some +p ammo in there and you have a very light (4lbs) brush gun for deer. It the power equal to a 10mm handgun at that point. anyway, the gun is a blast to shoot and using glock mags is a real plus for me. It is in no way a primary battle weapon. it is a back up gun that just happens to be fun.

Before I got into AR15 world of joy, ...I'm embarrassed to admit that I used to own the sub2000 w/ glock mags a loooong time ago with the idea to "compliment" my glock and sig handgun collection lol.

Pros:
-Very light...but then again a handgun is better no?
-Very compact (when folded)...but then again a handgun is better no?
-Relatively inexpensive
-Takes handgun mags

Cons:
-pistol ammo
-TOOOONS of FTF and FTE (but I blame the crappy 33 rnd mags I used)
-shooting +p ammo in it scared me in that it might break the gun...but I did it anyway
-weak flexible Plastic sights....
-No accesory rails
-Crappy extra accessories (seriously crappy...and I bought them all (blush) )
-Boring as hell (to each his/her own)

After I found out that what I really wanted was a fully customizable and rugged RIFLE, I got into AR15's and I sold the sub2000 never looking back.

That being said, take the sub2000 for what it is.

If I did it all over again, I'd have saved up the money I lost in the resale towards buying another AR15....the RFB looks pretty nice though.
