Ive narrowed my search for my first scandi type knife to one of three from Kellam, the puukko, Fang, or wolverine.

I think the Fang is what im after, but Im not sure. I cant find any specs other than blade length, and REALLY cant find any pics of two of them together so I can compare blade width and thickness, handle size (smallish hands) and shape.

Anyone seen any pics of these knives together I could use to compare? Any help would be super cool!!

P.S. I posted this here cause I want this knife for Bushcraft\hunting\fishing\camping\backpacking, I figured you all were my people!!

I figure you've already seen this particular image?

The Kellams are really cool blades, very attractive. I've only handled one but don't own one. The handles are not uncomfortable, but I think they could be improved. The front finger recess feels a little severe to me.

Get what you want and nothing less, but did something attract you to the kellams over other scandis? I only ask because I feel like, for the money, there are a lot of other good options (and cheaper!).

Have you seen here yet? www.ragweedforge.com

Yep Ive seen that pic. The wolverine or puukko is not in it.

Ive been through the entire ragnar site especially the Ahitis (sp) As I understand it he makes the knives for kellams. Also the Helle knives were nice, bur the Kellam knives are the only ones that have really caught my fancy. Ive heard they are quite good, and of the scandi type knives ive perused I like them the very best, as well as they seem affordable for a sort of entry level into the catagory.

The process I went through was reading how great scandi knives are for what I wanted to do with one, then thinking they were all a bit ugly,:barf: then thinking screw ugly this is going to be a work knife! who cares if its ugly!;) Then I found the Kellams and went SWEEEEEEEEET:eek: then I started reading up on them!

My bad on the picture! Didn't notice it lacked most of what you needed! Sounds like you pretty much know what you want though, which is great. I'll check through some archives for the other kellam pics...

I should add that I dont like to get married to ideas;) So if anybody says you might want to check out this or that, Im totally for it!

Thanks for the reply!!! Also thanks......I cant use the search.

You're in luck mate. Earlier today I photographed all my blades from Finnland as a group. I'm planning a thread on "The Knives of Finnland", but will post one of the picks early to help out:

The first blade on the left is a leuku by Iisakki Järvenpää. After that are the Kellam Fang, Striker and Puukko. (Incidently, these Kellam blades are made by Ahti.) After Kellam are the Wood Jewel 10 cm Carver and standard Carver. Finally, at the end are the Rosselli Grandfather and Grandmother.

I recommend the Ahti blades very highly. In general, Finnish blades are very tough, but the Ahti are also finely made.

Hope this helps.

I don't remember which model I have, but I have a Kellam and it is an excellent knife. On second examination it must be the puuko...just looked at the pics above more closely...

Maybe Im gonna lean towards the wolverine. Looks as though it may have a touch smaller handle than the puukko. Dont know if Ill gain anything for the extra length and width of the Fang blade.

What say ye?

I have a Fang and right now it is 'the knife' that I take places when in the back country. (until I get my skookum....a long wait :) ) I have been carring it in this role for almost 2 years and has held up well. It has performed superbly for me although I do wish that I had gotten the striker instead. I feel that it is a tad to long for my taste.

The difference is that the Wolverine blade uses a Lauri PT blade, while the others are (handmade?) Ahti blades.

The Lauri PT blade is a machine made blade but it has been differentially tempered so the edge is 62RC.

Thats pretty hard no? How might it hold up to dressing game? Carving along bones, or even cutting small bones (fish heads and such...) This cause chipping problems?

Well, I think I have decided on the regular puukko. Not sure I need the extra hardness of the wolverine blade (though I might prefer the contoured handle methinks...) and I dont think I need the extra size of the fang.

so.......question. Can I use an ultra-fine ceramic stone to get the high polish im gonna want on this thing or will I need to invest in a Japanese water stone, like 3000--6000 grit? Im really green to the scandi grind........what do you all do?

Remember that the Finns are a practical people and these knives haven't changed in centuries of hard use in harsh environments. This means that they are dependable & easy to take care of.

You won't have any worries keeping them sharp. I usually sharpen their flats using nothing more than 320-400-600 grit wet/dry emory paper and some leather stropping afterwards.

Another 'secret'. You can buy the Lauri PT blade on ebay for about $16-17 and make your own knife to suit. I've bought a few and made my own wolverine 'clones'. It's my principal outdoors knife.
