Kellam or Helle?

I've been looking into getting a more traditional looking scandi knife, and I like the looks of both of these brands. I notice Helle uses "stainless" laminated steel, and Kellam uses carbon blades. Just wondering what your thoughts/opinions on them are?

I think more than just me will say you cannot go wrong w/ either. I prefer carbon over stainless...but those are both great knife companies IMO

I like helle. I have three blades I made knives with and never had any problems with them.

I have various Kellam "KP" and "OK" knives with "silver steel".
Some of the sharpest and best knives I've ever had, but not cheap.

i don't have experience with either, but i will also recommend you take a look at woodjewel knives. ragnar carries them.

with that said, if i were going to buy one of those i would go kellam. i like thier handles a little more and i like carbon (mostly for nostalgia).

Honestly, Woodjewel's look the same to me. They all look like fancy Mora's :P

If im not mistaken, those helle blades are laminated(stainless layered over a carbon core). I have the Fjellkniven and it has held its edge extremely well. I have to say, however, that if you want a classic puukko and a great knife look at the jarvenpaa Aito Puukko. It has a birchbark handle that just cant be described, you have to feel it. 3.25 in. carbon blade. It has become my favorite knife. Have fun with wichever one you choose.

I deal with both companies. They are the best you will find. These knives are so sharp it isn't funny. If you can, get one of each. I buy Helle from Ragnar's Forge, and zi have a Kelluvo 10 from kellam.

I have a Helle Symfoni and have considered a couple from the Kellam line. I decided against any Kellams though, because of their propensity to put fancy script all over their blades (Helle does it too, but with much less "flare") with names of the knives like "Slasher", "Fang", "Wolverine", etc. etc. It's a glamour line. I can;t take it...I just can;t take it.

By the way, since I purchased the Helle, it has been the absolute sharpest knife in my collection. I'm finding that scandi-ground blades are, for me, the easiest type of grind to bring to a superb, razor edge.

What are you using in your videos?

If any of you run across the traditional masur AKA karelain birch that goes with those scandi's please let me know. Id like a few blocks of it.

rockywolf, in the videos i'm using my woodjewel that i got in a trade from Gene (gunknifenut) about a week and a half ago.

I got a Helle Futura in a swap awhile back, and it is superb. The blade is easily the sharpest I've had, and easy to keep that way. The handle is very comfortable too. I normally prefer carbon steel, but I have no major complaints about the laminated stainless of the Helle, except that the spine won't spark a firesteel well (no big deal).

foilist, you can make the spine strike a firesteel really well by sharpening it to a sharp 90 degree angle with a file or coarse stone. you may also have to flatten the side of the blade to give a really sharp corner.

The spine seemed pretty sharp-edged, but perhaps I can improve it, or maybe add some texture - crude jimping or something. I may as well try, since I already scratched it up with clumsy striking.:o

On another subject, I think the Helles are all full-length, hidden tang. Most of them are peened at the butt end where they protrude.

Well, I decided I'd just put a couple things up on the trading forum, and say I'm looking for either. That way, if someone bites, the choice is taken from my hands. Good solution, Lee.
