Is Kelley's 1080 annealed or hardened? I ground on some this weekend. Some before for forging and some after.

When I ground it before forging I noticed a LOT of sparks and it is very tough. That makes me believe it is hardened.

Any ideas?

I think it's annealed but certainly not fully. It cuts fine with a file as it comes, but it is softer after forging and normalizing than it is when I get it.

It's annealed, but not dead soft. Kelly told me the RC is around 36. That can be improved by annealing further.

The 1080 I have is HR (hot rolled as rolled). It will typically be 36 Hrc.
Thanks again,

KCC

Have you tried removing the mill scale before working with the steel? If not, try soaking a couple pieces in some vinegar for a day or 2. The scale will slough off, making it easier to drill/cut. n
