Got off the phone a little while ago with Ken Coats whom many of you are probably getting familiar with by now from some of his offerings in the "custom folders for sale" area as well as on this forum.
Ken has posted several 4" jacks for sale over the past months which prompted me to contact him and ask about the possibility of his doing a two blade version based upon Case's 6292 Texas Jack pattern which (along with the smaller 6232 pattern) has become a favorite of mine for EDC.
Ken informed me that that very knife was in fact the basis of the single bladed jacks he was offering for sale. The knife he was using as a template, in fact, was a Case 4 Dot, 1976 version, carried by his father.
When Ken told me that he could do a two blade based upon the 6292 we were off and running.
I asked Ken to craft the blades from D2, use his own dyed and jigged bone (in his "winterbottom" style) and include a shield. I also asked Ken to modify the secondary "pen" blade with a hybrid pen/wharncliffe blade like on the current Case medium Texas Jack 6232 pattern.
I find that the hybrid pen/wharncliffe blade along with the clip master blade gives me the best attributes of a stockman knife in a two bladed jack.
Here are Ken's initial comments/specs:
Blade and Spring- D2, Hollow ground, 600grit hand finish.
Frame 416 ss milled from barstock, liners and bolsters integral.
Scales: Ken Coats dyed and jigged bone, its actually more of a Reddish Mahogany color than it looks in the photo.
Closed 4", Open 7 1/4", Back is flush in open, closed, and half stop positions
About a 6 on the pull open scale.
Sole Authorship --All parts made by me in my shop.
This was cooked up between Elliott and I in the last few months, the original pattern was a case Texas Jack from
1976 that my dad carried for a while. It was all in all a fun project.
I'm sure Ken will visit the thread and perhaps add more or answer any questions which may come up.
Anyway, here's a preview of the knife which Ken will be sending along tomorrow. Keep in mind that the actual color is more closely aligned with the deep red colored bone used by Case in the 70's. Hope you guys enjoy it!
