Today I want to share with you a knife made by Ken Erickson which I wasn't even aware was going to be built.

It came about like this...Ken and I were chatting on the phone as we do regularly while tossing around ideas for future patterns for him to build. Ken is one, like many of the best makers (on this site and elsewhere) who is constantly looking forward to a new challenge.

As we were chatting, I was leafing through an old Remington catalog looking for a pattern with which to challenge Ken. I came upon an image of the humpback whittler and studied the illustration...complex grinds, a locking master blade, two accessory slipjoint blades, intricate pattern and bolsters...hmmm, this might be just the thing.

I took an image from the catalog and sent it in an email to Ken along with a couple of old images of actual knives from yesteryear in worn condition.
I threw down the gauntlet and said, "You want a challenge? Build this!"

A month or two later during a phone conversation I told Ken that I was just having a laugh with him and that he shouldn't feel compelled to build that knife and left it at that.

When I saw Ken at the Blade Show later that year, this is what he handed me while visiting with him and his wife up in his room...Needless to say, my jaw dropped.

Ken never had a pattern for this knife nor an example in hand. What he built was purely from images from a catalog and a couple of old knives found online.

The knife is 3 5/8" closed and blades are D2.

Elliott,

Beautiful, I like to see different patterns resurrected and this certainly suits that criteria. Wonderful stag and
great build as usual for Ken. You're a lucky guy, come to think of it, I am too!
I just love this stuff and can't seem to get enough.

Jeff

WOW Elliott!! THAT is about as good as it gets in a folder. BEAUTIFUL stag, excellent blade steel, and a nice selection of blades with a locking master!

AWESOME!!

Thanks for showing it,
Peter

That's a gorgeous mechanical marvel.

Tin

Thanks all...especially Tin...it must really take something special to compel a post to be written when you've been on the site since the beginning (just as I have) and only felt the need in all those years to make 8 total posts. I'm honored as I'm sure Ken will be when he comes across this thread.:thumbup:

Eish!

Utterly sublime.............there should be a law against such exquisite boy-toy loveliness ;)

Thanks for sharing this one again Elliot. I was lucky enough to have a very close look at this knife at Blade 2011 and I can honestly say that it is one of the finest custom folders I have ever seen. The fit, finish, and mechanics are perfect. This one is a stunner and for me was "the knife" of Blade that year.

Hi Steven! Yep, Steven was in the room with me when I got this beauty and Steven received his own beauty as I recall, a stockman based upon a lovely Schrade pattern.
It certainly was a great time, brother.

The profile of that main blade is out of this world, what would call it?

If you've posted this one before Elliott, I must have missed it. What a great looking knife! I really like that master blade.

Thanks, guys. I don't know if it has a name beyond being a particular variant of clip blade. It is a complex and interesting grind.

Wow, I really like that.

Please continue the trend you've started, Blues. I'm really enjoying these recent posts of yours.

Thanks, Aaron, I'll see what I can do.

whittler is my favourite pattern- and this one rocks! This is the slipjoint I'd most like to have of any I've seen so far.

Sir, you have some fine taste in knives. I have been enjoying the knives you have been posting. Please continue.

Chris

Thanks so much for sharing all these beautiful slipjoints, the various patterns and fine photos offer us who are less versed examples to study.
