Safe & Happy New Year Ken,

Congrats, Roland! I know how much you liked my dogleg so I think you will be very pleased.

Another beauty, Ken.

Thanks Elliot, i really don't think it (pocket knives) get any better than this.
i will need a fine leather slip pouch to protect it while carrying. i have lots of elk, deer, moose hides so i could make one myself. a funky pouch for an elegant knife, perfect disguise.

Beautiful work Ken! Congratulations Roland, what a terrific score from one of the best. Just a stunning piece of craftsmanship.

That's the cat's meow!! Well done, Ken! Great catch, Roland!

That is beginning the new year with a bang.

I appreciate hearing the support, 'cause somebody could also be upset they didn't get it.
But, the accolades must be given to Ken who made this knife with technical expertise, his sense of artistry, and concentration and determination that every step be done until just right. how else can such a knife be created ?
all i did was get lucky, and for that i am grateful.
The Serpentine Pen along with the Serpentine Jack have become about my 2 favorite Traditional patterns. and i love elephant ivory best of all. and built by Ken it is just as strong as it is elegant.
so "I had to".
thanks again Mr. Erickson for making me "Juan Luckyman" !

Ken: can you help w/a definition? "Dog-leg" vs. "serpentine". Some doglegs' bottom bolster (opposite from pivot) curves toward the back spring. I always thought that was a "true" "dogleg", but you and your catalogue do not concur. Could you clarify?

Thanx,
Mike

Mike,

Thanks for the question and its a good one! I generally concur in your assessment. When I think of a dogs hind leg, I see the inward curve from the center backspring pin to the bolster as you describe. I included dogleg in quotes in my posting above in deference to the author of Blades guide to Knives and their values, 6th addition. Here is a quote from the publication, "Markedly tapered serpentine pen knives are often called "dog-legs". However,if they have a Wharncliffe master blades, they are called Wharncliffe knives". Oh my head hurts!

Hope this helps

Ken

Man this is a stunning knife, I have stayed away from the for sale section for a while now as I can't afford one, but I guess drolling is allowed. I am having a real hard time not staring at the lines and great ivory.
