Hi guy's first post!!! I already love the forum!!!

Ok here is my problem...I have been thinking lately of getting a Kerambit and someone on a different message board suggested that I give the HI Kerambit hybrid a gander...My problem is I cant find one to look at nor the price for one..Can anyone help??

Also, several months ago I was looking at the HI website and found a knife that I was very interested in getting..Figured on waiting for Christmas before buying it (ex inlaws wanna buy me something special!) and now I cant seem to locate it..

All I can remember is that it was an "Americanized" Khukuri and that it had a larger or thicker tang than on a normal knife...Anyone know what I am talking about??

Thanks for the help

Leatherface (sorry)?

Here's a link (no pics, sorry) about the kerambit and its evolution in H.I. Jake probably still has pictures, as does Dan, I'd imagine.

Your description of the americanized khuk is somewhat vague, but ALL the H.I. khuks have a heavier-than-normal tang--whether it be rat-tail, or full tang.

Can you give some indices about length, blade shape, weight, or function?

Welcome.

Kismet,
it is "Leatherface" instead of Leatherneck...Horror movie freak ya know??:D

Thanks for the prompt reply...The pic is what I am looking for, but i can wait for a while..

If it helps any, it was similar to the Ang but had a slightly straighter blade...kinda like a cross between a Khukri and a Bowie..Does this help any??

thanks
Dave

I used to carry an HI kerambit in my LBV, back when I had a need for such things. :) These days I have other things that fill its role better but I don't see myself selling it anytime soon. I like it too much.

Not that I'm an enabler or anything but here are some pics for you.

Side-by-side with another favorite of mine, the Spyderco Manix, for size comparison:

A few of the many grip options this knife gives you:

It's the first knife I've ever owned that allowed me to pull a nail out of a board, then drive it back in. (Yeah, a hammer will do that too, but hammers aren't so good at cutting.) It's hard to see the etch (which has mostly worn off) in the pics but the belly and the tip on mine are the hardened zones. The false edge (which I sharpened) is unhardened and, while tough, dulls easily on hard surfaces.

Come to think of it, in the fourth pic, look at the dark areas around the belly and tip. Those are the hardened areas.

I can't help you with the Americanized khukuri, sorry.

Welcome, Leatherface. I don't have anything to add to the good advice you're recieved here. Let us know what you find and what khuk you select; it's interesting to see these blades from new eyes.

Welcome from THR, leatherface. I think you'll find we take the high road here too.

Are you thinking of the AK Bowie?

...and fat free peanut butter

Did someone mention Peanut Butter? I love Peanut Butter. You know Albertson's generic brand name, 'essentia' or some thing? They make a basic 2 buck a jar peanut butter that is better than Adams. If you can't get Trader Joes, go for this.

H.I. Karambits are a style all their own they really are not like anything else. I have 13 of them that I keep in a display and a couple more that I have for carry. I have been into karambits for many years but the H. I. is in a place all its own. After I got my first one I was really hooked and have been buying them every chance I get. It's not just the H.I. khukuri that gets into your blood. Oh and stay away from the Kardas after all how many infections can a person endure at the same time?

Daniel,
thanks for the welcome..No that isnt it...Had more of a Khukri design just not as swept as a normal...

Munk,
Yea I am a big fanof peanut butter myself, however I am on a rather strict diet right now, so having my morning peanut butter sandwhich with my coffee is out right now

Azis,
Well I am looking for my first one right now..lol

hmm...doing it myself might be an option if I get tired of waiting...Bummer that I am by nature laze huh?:D

Aziz, Those kardas are really sweet knives. You should check them out. I also have a JKM that is sweeter than honey.

Hi Leatherface,
Good to see another NC boy on here. If the HI Kerambit is what you're looking for, email Yangdu Martino at himimp@aol.com . She might have one. They come in periodically, but not enough to stock them. Here's mine.

Hi, Dave. Did the kuk you're talking about look like this? If so, it started as a Chiruwa AK, and was modified by Dan Koster. It was indeed "extra beefy". :)

Welcome to BF and the Cantina!

Fergusan,
Yup NC born and bred...Tarheel fan as well..lol..Good to see a fellow NC'er here on the forums:D

That is one sweet looking knife, but ya need to get some sharkskin sheath action going on for that one;) ..just curious, but how long is the blade length??

John,
Good to see ya bro!!..Yuppers that would be almost exactly it...The one that I looked at had a black handle with silver bolster's and a silver guard (IIRC)...The only other difference would be a slightly less upswept "arc" in the middle...but yuppers that seems to be it...Custom huh?? grr being poor!!! Havent made a knife is 5 years...Might wanna try it again..GRRRRR being lazy!!!!:p

Thanks

Yeah, what aproy said

I was afraid this would happen. When Dan Koster championed the Kerambit I just watched. I have no need of a Kerambit. I said it was the perfect blade for a fight in a the alley behind a Hong Kong bar, or for cutting off blubber on a whale a hundred years ago.

Over the years people have purchased many Kerambits. They seem to like them. I still have no use for one. They've always been attractive, though.

I guess someday I'll get around to buying one. Damn 0*&.ll!! 34? forumites and their gushing posts about Kerambits!
