Are there two different steals the 1050 commonly come in? I've read some places it's a AUS8 and others claim 8Cr13MoV.
If they come in both, how can I tell the difference and is one better than the other?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

I can tell you its definitely not 8cr13mov. I do believe these were AUS8A

The original Kershaw 1050 Folding Field was made in Aus8A by Ichiro Hattori of Seki Japan.
An updated version of the model in VG10 was released by Hattori under his own brand and can
sometimes be found. The most recent Kershaw China made reissue used 8Cr13Mov.

There was a reissue of the 1050 Folding Field Knife about 3-4 years ago in 8Cr13MoV, made in China. The original was AUS-8A. Here's a reference.

This. If the knife says "China" on the blade, then it is made from the 8cr13mov. If the knife says "Japan" or "Oregon" on the blade, then it will be from the AUS-8A steel. Not very many China made 1050's made it out before it was completely discontinued.

Just out of curiosity, given your location, are you associated with KAI USA?
