What is the blade steel on a 1440? It is marked Kershaw KAI 1400 Japan. Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure about that. The Snap on web site says country of origin is Japan.

The Japanese do not make knives using Chinese steel.

A quandary for sure.

The Chubby done for Snap On was a OEM deal. They were made in the USA. However they are not being made anymore. The replacement (probably a better word to use rather than updated) is indeed 8Cr13.

Here's the link to Kershaw's site with the info:

But isn't the 1440 the Chubby?
The OP was asking about the 1440, not the 1445.

I too have a Snap-On/Kershaw 1440 and am interested in what steel the blade is. Couldn't find any info when I checked into it a little while ago.
