I've been looking for a nice folder with a blade around 3" and a price under $50 and was planning on a Leek, but I a just found a site with the discontinued 1740 for sale and am pretty interested in it. I really like the blade shape and the flipper mechanism looks pretty unique, just wondering if anyone had any experience with the knife.

In particular, how thick is the blade relative to the Leek? How does it compare when it comes to slicing? The grind looks to be different. Also how do those black grippy inserts feel in the hand?

If anyone has pictures of the NRG next to the Leek that'd also be great.

Leek at the top, 1740 in the middle, 1745 at the bottom.

I like the comfort of the NRGs compared to the Leek. Quite a bit thicker in pocket, too, if that matters to you. The blade thicknesses are the same, .09".

The inserts aren't that big of a deal, but I really like the swell of the handle in my palm, a very solid grip.

The flipper can be a little sluggish, though, unless you oil both the pivot and the track the flipper rides in.

Another similar knife, if you can find one, is the 1775 OD-1.

Excellent, thanks. A little thicker in the pocket is no worry at all, I'm used to thick and heavy traditional patterns so the NRG won't be anything out of the ordinary.

The OD-1 looks nice, I like the unusual flipper mechanisms Kershaw sometimes produces. Can't seem to find any for sale but I'll keep an eye out, I love the blade shape.

Just got the NRG in the mail, very pleased with it. Feels great in the hand, good fit and finish, nice sharp edge, essentially no blade play and well centered when closed. The flipper sure is fun! Flips over very quickly and with good authority every time, just as good as any assisted opening I've tried.

If anyone else sees one of these for sale and is thinking about picking one up I wouldn't hesitate.

It's funny that such a compact knife feels so solid and grippy in hand, isn't it?

Yeah, they did a really nice job with the G10 and the little inserts and the general shape of the handle. Feels very secure. Also I figured I might as well post a picture of my new (made eight years ago) knife:
