Anybody use the Kershaw axe? They look like a good buy-- about $24, one piece head and shaft with a molder rubber handle, sheath, 14.5oz, 11" long and 3.5" head.

Dale,

I only handled it in a shop once. Didn't like the balance and felt heavy in the hand. It might just be me as I only seem to get along with wooden handle hatchets and dislike the lightness of the composite ones as much as the heaviness of the forged ones.

Piece of JUNK!!!!

Just trust me on this one... My brother bought one and it is of such poor quality that he is sending it back (lapolicegear.com).

Save your money and buy a Fiskars (exactly the same as Gerber) 14" hatchet for $19 at your local Lowe's or Home Depot. Great buy.

Already in the kit and it works too :) Thanks for the tip on the Kershaw.

I have the Kershaw, but haven't been able to do a lot of heavy chopping with it. What I was looking for was a light, cheap, hatchet I can keep in my pack/car while hiking. I've used the gerber/fiskars before, but what really drove me away was the fact that the gerber gator model(ones with knife or saw in the handle)were all made in China, not in Sweden. I am not too sure if Gerber is going to be going over to that market, which would probably drive the quality of their knives down. I believe, that the Kershaw is not made in China.

What I really like is the one piece design and what worries me about the gerber/fiskars are the fiberglass handles. Heres a thread that helped me make that decision.
