kershaw blade hardness??

Sarah from Kershaw's customer service told me:
"Thank you for your interest in our knives! The Sandvik 14C28N has a RC of 58-60 and the S30V is 57-59."

In all honesty, I'd rather have 14C28N than S30V.

Tell you what. I'll send you two Blurs. Both have black handles, both are pretty new, both have satin blades, and both are sharpened to 20 degrees. One is 14C28N, and one is S30V. The S30V one is marked as such on the blade. Use them. A month after receiving them, decide which one you prefer. Keep it. Then send me the other one back.

^Oh snap! :)

Snap what? Normally, "oh snap!" is indicative of a sarcastic or witty retort. I wasn't being sarcastic in my offer. In fact, the OP has E-mailed me a reply and the Blurs will be sent out tomorrow.

I'm confused now

Sometimes it's also used for moment of surprise... Like "Oh wow"

asm, Yeah I feel that way too sometimes, it abrades pretty quickly on DMT's and Norton's

14C28N is great stuff though, it holds a pretty nice edge and sharpens up very quickly. I like it more than S30V because it's so fine-grained, getting it razor sharp off of a lower grit is very quick and easy. S30V on the other hand is a real workhorse steel, it just keeps going.

i totally agree i have switched to s30 or elmax for my work carry knives i bought a beat up 0350pe to carry for work and loved it it would stay sharp all week and only require minimal touch up on the weekend

I'm curious. I have two Elmax knives, but there's that rope-cutting video where he seriously derides the Elmax in favor of S30V, and I had another "steels junkie" say that Elmax isn't even a decent knife steel but was more appropriate in industrial situations. That whole controversy sorta confused me.

All of the modern knife steels are really good material alot of the difference is in the heat treat and what you want to do with it

I was just surprised and impressed, no sarcasm at all. I love seeing stuff like that, it's really a cool thing.

On S30V, I was under the impression that it's a very fine grained steel on account of it being a powdered steel. I've gotten very fine edges from the S30V that I've used, which is really limited to ZTs, the Blur, and a Leatherman.

Whomever said that Elmax isn't a good knife steel is just misinformed. It is a fantastic knife steel, and folks who have used their Elmax knives can attest to that. The 0560s I've had have all been brilliant with edge retention, stain resistance, and edge toughness. Sharpening to any meaningful degree is a real chore, but I don't mind putting in the extra time if I have to. It's great stuff, especially since ZT usually runs their Elmax at 60 or a little above. A friend of mine tested his 0561 blade at 60.9 a month or so ago, so as far as I know, they're doing that stuff justice.

Thanks. That's reassuring. I also have the Speedform II, which has Elmax, and I'm looking forward to the 566. Gonna be a great little knife, and how they got the weight down to 5.3 (for the prototype at least) I have no idea. But it's really cool.

How is the speed form? I been looming at them for awhile based solely on the elmax blade steel.

i just got my blurs from jnieporte. the knives look brand new.. there was also a kershaw torx set &a thing of tuff-glide. ty so much :D
ill be carrying the 14n blur today. i figured id just switch them every day. i like the handles but it seems like they woud get nicked up &loose their finish easy.

You're welcome. I included the Torx driver so you could swap the pocket clip or do some tinkering. The handles hold up okay. I've had keys, pocket change, etc. leave scratches on mine. If you're concerned about nicking them both up and then sending me back a damaged one, don't be worried. They're users, not collectibles.
